OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Thank you! How do i go about finding PIR group? haha. I didn't even know they existed!

They are NOT supposed to post those dates... the guys in boot camp are supposed to be practicing OPSEC.  Yeah, I know, happens all the time, but it isn't right.

Just wish the family members would get a clue and start being mindful of why the Navy does things the way they do.

OPSEC? I'm not even sure what that is...

Operational Security.  I know, no one tells the new folks.

It concerns not only ships and fleet movements, but anything which would give information to those who would harm us. This includes morale, equipment not working, down to the food on the ship running low.

I know battlestations isn't "real", but the recruits who are going through it are treating it as the real deal.  This includes not releasing the dates, just as a ship would not release the dates of when they are moving.  Homecoming in the fleet is announced through official channels such as the ombudsman (specially trained volunteer spouse who works with the ship).  Homecoming dates have been changed if the spouse chatter too much online.  No worries, just don't encourage others to post BS dates!

Google Navy OPSEC and you'll come up with dozens of pages, including actual training pages.  Also learn about PERSEC (personal security).

Sorry to lecture, but it is important you know what your part in keeping yourself and your sailor safe will be.

No! I prefer the lecture! I wouldn't want to break any rules. And thank you for clueing me in!

Thanks, I hate to be a downer, but there's some harsh reality ahead of you all.  Easier to develop good habits now than later.

If you wouldn't say it to a terrorist, scammer or predator,  don't post it here.  This is no way near a secure site.  A goldmine of personal info, actually.  Do set your pages to private.  You have no idea who is reading here.

Yes, a little paranoid.  In part my Navy training (ETs have Top Secret clearances usually) and in part my experience with an internet stalker.

Thank you so much for the shared knowledge! :)

You're entirely correct, the people who run this site are not Navy and do not watch for violations.

You can tactfully mention what you're learning about OPSEC and how exciting it is.  (yeah, right, I know).   Calling them out individually will only get you attacked.  I'll do it here, but I try to be diplomatic, I know you all don't know.  You just need to make the best judgement call you can in each situation.  Don't break the rules yourself, and try to guide those who are open to it.

These are the same moms who get mad when they can't have deployment schedules.

Chief Angie and some of the other moms who do a lot of volunteering here try to let the new moms know, but some of them do not like to be told they're in the wrong, or they think this place is safe because it has "Navy" on it.  Scary.

I've known about OPSEC and PERSEC for practically my entire life, so I stay away from posting personal details and all, but are we allowed to private message someone last names or something if we know they have a loved one in the same ship/div?

Thanks :)

I'd say yes in this case, no in the fleet.  These boards really aren't secure, no email or internet communication is safe from electronic snooping.  I doubt this board is being hacked for boot camp info.

As for sharing a detail, can you trust the other person not to post it?

I can. We've been conversing for about 2 weeks before either of us thought about giving away a last name. If this were a real-life case then I wouldn't send out any info in general. I know it's meant to be treated that way though.
