Hello everyone! My fiancé and I are getting married next week, he ships off to bootcamp Nov. 18th! :( My question is: when is the best time (when is the smartest time) to change my name. Before he ships off to basic, or when he gets done with his schooling? Does it even matter? Lol. Please any advice will help!

My husband and I got married before he did his paperwork for the navy last year and I changed my last name right away. It's just easier that way in my opinion

ok thank you! Hope you're doing alright!

Thank you! It's tough but I hear it gets easier after a few weeks lol.
My husband got to bootcamp yesterday :)

I'd say right away, it makes it easier later.

ok thank you! So do I change it before giving the recruiter our marriage license since I will also have to give him my social security card and what not? That way my current name is on all the documents I give the recruiter.

You can do it either way, we gave the recruiter our marriage certificate and then provided them with all of the updated documentation after

ok, thanks! :)

If you already know you're going to get married, it's going to be much less of a headache to do it before he leaves for bootcamp. You won't have to worry about him getting leave time or getting days off or getting a chit approved to get married. The paperwork will be much faster and easier and you won't have to worry about getting married in time to be on his orders.

However, don't just get married because he's leaving. If the marriage discussion wasn't something that was part of your relationship before the Navy came into the picture, then it can definitely be a smart idea to let the relationship play out naturally and not add the stress of a rushed marriage.

thank you! We have been together for 8 years so its been talked about plenty of times! :) I was just wondering about the name change.

Aww my husband and I were together for 7.5 years when we got married last year :). How exciting! Congrats on your new journey in the navy :). It's such a hassle having to change your name everywhere but it's SO much easier having the same last name while he's away at bootcamp(in my opinion).

thank you! :)
