I finally got a letter from my fiance today! My hands were shaking as I opened it, and I couldn't stop crying out of happiness and relief! He sounds like he's okay - he was even appointed as a section leader - but he's discouraged because he failed his first physical fitness assessment. He even talks like he's not going to make it, but this is very typical of him, to get down on himself. However, I'm starting to feel nervous for him - although I know he will make it - but I was wondering how often this happens? Is it very common for a recruit to fail their first assessment? I want to get a letter of encouragement out to him as soon as possible, and I can use any and all tips on how to make him feel as comforted as I can through a letter! Thanks, ladies!

Does he mean the assessment they do right when they get there? If so, my son failed his. He was in really good shape - he played varsity and Captains Cup sports and worked out with some AD people on base. But, after flying non stop from Tokyo to Japan, he was pretty jet lagged and failed his first pt test. He passed boot camp just fine :-)

Keep in mind, the Company Commanders aren't hard on them because they want them to fail - they're hard on them because they don't! He's going to be doing a lot of PT over the next several weeks, so plenty of time for him to get ready to pass the test :-)

I do know that the instructors are only there to help them, ultimately, but I just worry because he gets down on himself so easily. I just hope he uses that criticism to better himself, instead of trying to give up. But then again, I'm not sure they'd let him, haha! I'm going to be praying him for the next few weeks, and encouraging him to give it his all so he can pass that test!

Lol - they won't let him give up, and neither will his shipmates. They're in it together :-) Praying and encouragement is the best thing you can do for him right now. Just remind him that with so many trying to enlist these days, combined with the military doing so many drawdowns (and making the enlistment requirements so tough), he wouldn't have made it this far - actually enlisting and going to boot camp - if the Navy didn't have faith in him and believe he could do it. He DOES have what it takes in him :-)

This is true! He had to go through a lot to get in, and anyway, he is a special guy! I know he'll be okay. Just can't wait to hear from him again. I pray for him everyday, and he told me in his letter that he does the same every night before bed. So him and I are in this together too! :)

Don't worry, a lot of people fail the first physical assessment. I believe that if you pass the physical and the first exam the first time, you automatically make E2 (Not positive on that, but that's what happened to my bf). However, my boyfriend failed his swim test the first time! So it's very common to fail the first time! :) I bet by the time you hear from him again he will have passed the assessment with flying colors!

Thank you for the reassurance! I think that he will be all right, and by telling him that many others go through it, I'm sure that will help him to feel better.

I think they only get E2 (if they pass first pt and exam) if their recruiter did the paperwork for it.. or something like that. Haha

I try to assure him in all my letters that I believe in him and am proud of him, but I think I'm going to have to try harder. In his letter, he asked me to promise that I'll stand by him even if he fails - I know he won't fail, because I believe in him, but even if he does, I feel like he should know I am always by his side! But I know it is a hard time for him. Thank you for your advice! I'm about to sit down and crank out an epic letter for my recruit! :)

I failed my PT first off in boot camp.  It was a struggle to pass at all, but I had all my shipmates pulling for me too, the really good runners would finish, but run back and run with those of us who were slower.  We'd encourage each other through the pushups and sit-ups.  The first one is hardest, everyone is exhausted and the division hasn't bonded fully yet.  With your support and the help of his shipmates, he'll make it.

But every recruit is down about something when they fist get there.  There's so much going on, no one does it all perfectly right away.  He'll perk up, you'll see.

He did say that his bunk mate is helping him a lot, but he said it was because he's married. I hope that he finds support from the others in his division, and I'm sure you're right and that he will! I ended up writing a six page letter last night with all kinds of love and encouragement and good wishes in there. It's a good thing he wanted me to keep writing the long letters :)

I just want him to start believing in himself... again, though, I'm sure you're right and it'll get better soon! I really hope I get a phone call from him soon. I know it would make all the difference in the world for both of us.

my SR who had the same date and all as yours also failed his first assesment. he said it was common for people to fail it because there bodies had not yet built up the muscels to support that type of fittness yet. dont let him be discouraged! btw what div is he in 013?

I am encouraging him as much as I can in every letter I send! :) I did tell him that many fail the first test, and maybe by now he has passed or is at least feeling better. Hopefully I know in the next letter! But no, he is in ship 03/div017.
