I'm a Navy Wife and I created this group back when I was a girlfriend and my now husband had gone to bootcamp. Its funny because i joined this website when they had under 50 members. This website has been sooooo helpful and I met so many people on here that gave great advice. I made this group so that we could all come together and give eachother advice and share ideas. I see that this group is growing more and more by the day, Im happy to see that because so many wives/fiances/and girlfriends are clueless when it comes the military lifestyle. Not knowing what to expect and not knowing about deployments, bootcamp, duty stations, etc. I want this to be the place you all recommend because so many people on this site are knowledgeable and very helpful. Once again thanks for joining my group and i hope you get all the information you need. I dont get to log on as much as i used to but i try my best to get on here. So if u have any questions feel free to make a discussion topic and Im positive that it will get answered if not, inbox me :-) Take Care ♥

Melissa, if I may ask, were you married when he got his orders, or after, on leave? It doesn't make a difference, but I do give advice and you may be a person with firsthand knowledge who can help everyone later. Was his command expecting a single sailor or a married one? If you don't care to answer, that would be cool, but I think you may have some very good experience to share. Thanks.

hey Melissa..I Know im kinda late on the situation but if i may ask..why are they making him get a place?
Comment by Anti M on May 21, 2010 at 11:08pm
Melissa, they can't make him live on the street! He should talk to his chain of command or the command master chief. That's ridiculous! Someone is wrong, and I doubt it is him.

Melissa- Have you looked at the place that you both agreed on? I mean, in person, not just on the internet? My husband and I looked at places online and we thought one of them was the one so we hardly put any thought into anything else, but when we got there is was awful. We just moved to Norfolk, which is the only reason I'm commenting. The only place we found that was decent and had washer and dryer is in Virginia Beach, which is where we are now. I hope everything works out for the two of you and that you are able to move here before October!

Melissa, he should talk to Navy Relief about a small emergency loan or help with the deposit. They used to do that, so maybe it will still apply. Can't hurt to ask.

Monty's mom, I have no good news for you. An E-3 or below is not authorized to take a dependent overseas. She must be command sponsored be eligible for base housing, and on base housing is not authorized for E-3 and below. She should not just go with him, the Navy Lodge won't let her stay very long. He must put in a request through his command for her sponsorship. Also, she will not get the right kind of visa to stay as a resident if she isn't sponsored by the command.

If he is E-4 or above, he'll still have to request for her to be command sponsored. I used to live in Yokosuka, the housing there took almost a year to open up. Sasebo is a small base, I don't know what the wait is, but it wouldn't be short.

My old blog on the subject:

I'm sorry Melissa. I know how frustrating the pay situation goes. We were supposed to get paid for our move to Norfolk, its been almost a month and we still haven't heard anything. Is he looking to live on base or are you guys looking for an apartment in town? What ship is he going to be on? If he's met some of the guys, I'm sure one of them would be willing to drive him around-- I'm sure those living on the boat would like an excuse to get off and a lot of them have cars.

I actually have a question for my son and his future wife....He is about to be sent to Japan for 3 years, he is planning on getting married before he goes on June 7th....my question is, how long should it take for them to get housing on base? She's wondering if she should go with him and them stay in a hotel on base, or just wait til housing comes through....I guess, it depends on how long that will be. Any idea???? Thanks

I got mine both in the military and as a civilian going to Iran, so I was able to ask about it without being rushed. This was looooong before 1995. I think they say "penicillin" because it's easier than explaining gamma globulin to recruits in line. Too many people are allergic to penicillin, the military doesn't even use it for infections these days! I've had it in shots too, and they're "normal" shots. I don't know why the corpsman said that, verbally lazy?
