I'm a Navy Wife and I created this group back when I was a girlfriend and my now husband had gone to bootcamp. Its funny because i joined this website when they had under 50 members. This website has been sooooo helpful and I met so many people on here that gave great advice. I made this group so that we could all come together and give eachother advice and share ideas. I see that this group is growing more and more by the day, Im happy to see that because so many wives/fiances/and girlfriends are clueless when it comes the military lifestyle. Not knowing what to expect and not knowing about deployments, bootcamp, duty stations, etc. I want this to be the place you all recommend because so many people on this site are knowledgeable and very helpful. Once again thanks for joining my group and i hope you get all the information you need. I dont get to log on as much as i used to but i try my best to get on here. So if u have any questions feel free to make a discussion topic and Im positive that it will get answered if not, inbox me :-) Take Care ♥

Once you know your arrival date and the full name of his command, be certain to request a Welcome Aboard packet. Very informative.

You can do your taxes there, no problem. They even have trained volunteers in the VITA program who can help you for free. Fleet and Family Services will be your friend, they offer a ton of resources and info.

... me again, sorry. That official link sucks, but at least it gives you the BAH and some phone numbers.
Comment by Anti M on February 19, 2010 at 11:18am
BTW, that link isn't the official one... and I didn't look up BAH, which varies by rate and zip code.

Most of the military rents in La Mesa, El Cajon, Chula Vista, Linda Vista, Serra Mesa (Tierra Santa). There are many apartments in La Jolla, but that's near the university and pricey. We rented in Birdland, which is a tiny little neighborhood above Mission Valley. Clairemont is nice, but one heck of a commute.

My husband was stationed on North Island. We didn't have kids, we lived off base in a nice little condo. He commuted by motorcycle, which is very convenient in SD. I don't know where the housing is, or what the wait list is like these days. North Island/Coronado itself... rentals are sky high, that's premium property. He WILL be commuting daily. With kids, Navy housing is a good option, but no one moves in right away. Some folks like their rental so much they decline the move over to housing.

I don't know a lot about the schools, but California spends a ton per student. I was working on my teaching certificate and I know the state is tough on credentials!

San Diego is a very kid friendly town. You'll have tons of things to do once you all settle in.

North Island has a Navy Lodge, so when you get the travel dates on the orders, make reservations there. You wouldn't want to be over on 32nd Street! We stayed over on "motel circle" in Mission Valley. You will need a car to get around.

Here's the thing with orders, the picking gives them verbal orders. The Navy is usually very good about making sure that's what the sailor gets, but until they have those hard copy orders in hand, you can't do much planning. That's where the delays and holds after school come in, waiting for those hard copy orders.

Don't make reservations at the Navy Lodge just yet. We never stayed there, I don't like them. There are MANY bases in San Diego, you have to wait until you know which base! There are a couple different Navy Lodges, Coronado where the air base is, Miramar, the Marine base, and 32nd St. Hold off for now. The Navy will pay for your hotel when you get there; they have a list of nice approved ones. That's called TLA, temporary lodging allowance, good for ten days. You can sign in to the housing site and begin looking at apartments now.

His orders will state how many travel days he has. Travel days do not count against his leave balance, they're "freebies" so to speak. He may also have some leave days attached, although that varies a lot by when he must be there and how many days he has earned.

best of luck. I adore San Diego! Practice driving like a mad woman though, the freeways are .. exciting. LOL.

I will be moving there in May when my 6 year old is done with 1st grade! Thats about the time he will be able to leave the base during A school if i am understanding things right. I am just looking forward to boot camp being over! Thank you Brendaw! I will make sure i get there extra early! Was getting your husband back to base at night hard? Was there a lot of traffic?

:) .. It does feel like that. Luckily the holidays and my daughter kept me busy.. Will you be moving up there with him when he starts A-School?
