BAH can take a long time to kick in, sometimes a couple months. He just has to stay on top of his PSD office about his pay.

As for AO, looks like it depends on just what he'll be doing, but looks like school is six weeks or so. Doesn't include hold times, as usual

I know that at Great Lakes, the married sailor put in a "Live Ashore" packet, requesting that they can live offbase with their spouse. They do have to complete their liberty phase one first. I assume P-Cola has something similar. Of course, the length of their school determines if dependents are authorized for a move, as far as I know, hold time does not factor into this.

Aviation rates can be stationed at Jacksonville, but it is a prime duty station and heavily in demand.

Since I have been there and done that, the picks aren't Navy-wide! The sailors put in their dream sheets. Then the detailers choose a pool of orders that line up with requests as closely as possible. As always, what the Navy needs comes first, so there may be orders on there no one requested, while other orders may simply not be available. Next, before graduation, the sailors get to pick their orders out of this class pool. This goes by class standing, how well they have done academically and professionally. Good grades, being squared away, showing leadership skills put you up in the standings.

The BAH comes through after 6 or more weeks; 8 is not unusual. The first check comes through after about four weeks. That one will be quite small as they take out the uniform allowance. Yes, the first couple months maybe tight for you. Talk to your creditors or landlord and see if they'll hold off for a month or so. Many will do so for the military. Can't hurt to ask.

Smoke, BAH is based on the zip code where the dependent resides. It is up to the sailor to provide this information to personnel in a timely fashion , as we know, paperwork moves slowly. As for how the Navy verifies where you are? I don't know how they do it these days. Possibly proof or residency such as a power bill. Since I was always with hubby, I never handled that detail myself.

I don't know if the bases in Hawaii have campgrounds now, they used to. Wouldn't be too hard to google. I know that on Big Island, the state parks are only $5 for camping. Oahu is somewhat more space-crunched, but I haven't been there for decades. The old housing I lived in is now resort beach cottages for the military.

BAH doesn't change unless the sailor says something, but if the Navy catches you in that, it all has to be paid back. Possible criminal charges. That's why I mentioned fraud. With the current financial crunch, I don't know if the reporting and monitoring procedures have changed.

Hawaii is still the US, so it is doable. Any foreign country? No way. Not just the expense of it, but also passports and visas, the inability to work legally, and the real possibilities of deportation.
