I'm a Navy Wife and I created this group back when I was a girlfriend and my now husband had gone to bootcamp. Its funny because i joined this website when they had under 50 members. This website has been sooooo helpful and I met so many people on here that gave great advice. I made this group so that we could all come together and give eachother advice and share ideas. I see that this group is growing more and more by the day, Im happy to see that because so many wives/fiances/and girlfriends are clueless when it comes the military lifestyle. Not knowing what to expect and not knowing about deployments, bootcamp, duty stations, etc. I want this to be the place you all recommend because so many people on this site are knowledgeable and very helpful. Once again thanks for joining my group and i hope you get all the information you need. I dont get to log on as much as i used to but i try my best to get on here. So if u have any questions feel free to make a discussion topic and Im positive that it will get answered if not, inbox me :-) Take Care ♥

Both my husband and myself went through first marriages in the Navy. I used to joke about first marriages being like warm up games in bowling, didn't count. I don't say that much anymore, it isn't supportive. But I can spot the trouble signs.

These are the classes currently offered in Great Lakes:

As you can see, heavy on domestic abuse prevention.

The thing with "the Navy" is it is made of of people. So while yes, there is official policy, there is often one person telling their sailors something completely .. well, stupid. Say a first class just got divorced. Is he going to be supportive of his sailors who want to get married? Probably not. Is that policy? No. Just as some spouses don't believe things are what they are in the navy and make plans to the contrary... then get bitterly disappointed when reality sticks an ugly nose in. Navy policy is indeed to support dependents. It just doesn't seem like it some days, especially when you don't have that coveted dependent Id card in your mitts yet.

Self-esteem courses are a great idea. They may even exist already. Many of the bases do offer all sorts of classes for military spouses. Check any of the fleet and family services courses; they do finances, and deployments and such. It varies by base.

Yeah, you'd think so, it was good incentive. I always had good grades when I tried, and I did try in the Navy. I'm surprised they just dished them out like that for the nukes (?). Perhaps the school (prototype?)was pass/fail, not grade point? Could be something small like that.

sea story ... the guy in the middle of the class rankings who really wanted orders to the C school in GA because it was his hometown... he lost out. He was LATE. Had to choose last and boy, did he pitch a fit when he got the oldest carrier in the fleet. Yelled at me for not taking Japan (I didn't want Misawa, I wanted Yokosuka). Screamed like a girl that I "stole" his orders. The chief was not amused.

... oh, and yes, there was a set of orders which did match my dream sheet. I took something better and still ended up where i wanted to go after a very long C school.

Sometimes dreams happen, but yeah, usually not.

Lisa, I got to choose my orders out of ET A school. We had 28 sets of orders for 28 students and we got to choose by class rank. I was number one academically, so I chose first. I would not be surprised if they did this at other schools also.

How you get signed up for medical: the service member puts you on his page two as a dependent. He then enrolls you in DEERS. Then comes the tricare paperwork, I haven't done it from boot camp, but I think they send it to you to fill out and submit. Possibly your sailor will do it, we need to ask an RDC or someone who has done this recently. You can choose between Prime and Standard (I'm on Prime as a retiree, I recommend it very highly). Your ID card will be your insurance card. As an active duty dependent, you will not need referrals for general care, that's for us old folks. Tricare is simple to find online, you can request their handbook at no charge.

Liberty is "normal' time off such as non-duty weekends and holidays, leave is requested earned time off. Liberty has a travel limit of 300 miles exactly.

I think they still have to be back on base by a certain time in A school until they've earned their privileges. The overnight thing wouldn't happen except on weekends, and then only after they're in phase two. Even then, I think they're supposed to check out with a liberty buddy. The Great Lakes A School Q&A group would have the exact answer for you.

To live off base with a spouse, they must finish certain requirements and submit a Live Ashore packet. They cannot live offbase without permission.
