I'm a Navy Wife and I created this group back when I was a girlfriend and my now husband had gone to bootcamp. Its funny because i joined this website when they had under 50 members. This website has been sooooo helpful and I met so many people on here that gave great advice. I made this group so that we could all come together and give eachother advice and share ideas. I see that this group is growing more and more by the day, Im happy to see that because so many wives/fiances/and girlfriends are clueless when it comes the military lifestyle. Not knowing what to expect and not knowing about deployments, bootcamp, duty stations, etc. I want this to be the place you all recommend because so many people on this site are knowledgeable and very helpful. Once again thanks for joining my group and i hope you get all the information you need. I dont get to log on as much as i used to but i try my best to get on here. So if u have any questions feel free to make a discussion topic and Im positive that it will get answered if not, inbox me :-) Take Care ♥

I used to live in Hawaii, the only reason I didn't get beaten up in Jr. High was I knew which bathrooms were dangerous. We may have lived in Navy housing, but I went to school in Ewa Beach. Sailors and their families have always been a target. However, there's more than one city I wouldn't ride the bus alone on at night. As for the beat to death story ... I'd have to see it in print before i'd believe it. I do know sailors who go out drinking by themselves have gotten hurt and robbed. But heck, that happens near every military base. Every! Just use common sense and don't wander off in the dark alone, be aware of your surroundings and don't flash cash or cards.

We live near an AF base and they let guests in the commissary. They can't buy anything, but they can walk in with you. My SIL takes my retired dad shopping once a week. Sounds like the Navy is still sticking to the old policy. I was raised with it and now I have a retired spouse ID, so I don't think about it too often. Yes, being a GF instead of a spouse can be a major pain sometimes.

The MWR tours would be safe because you would be in a group. Tourists are safe in Hawaii as long as they stay away from the shadier area. Tourists bring in too much money for the locals to mess with them too much. But as in any American city, there is crime. Just take the usual precautions.

But yeah, if your guy can't take leave, you will have to find things to do on your own. That's where the base facilities come in handy.

Which coffee plantation in Kona? There's a bunch of them. Kona is on Big Island, are you going to hop a flight down there?

Island of Oahu, right? Google the MWR for the bases there. They often have suggestions and discount tickets, and good short tours. The Polynesian Village is a great choice, and there's a luau there that's got a great show. Again, check MWR.

I haven't been to Oahu since dad was stationed there in 69, but I could tell you all about the Big Island! We went to a luau at the Hilton in Kona, but I didn't like it. Too touristy.

Get used to it? LOL!!!!!! My dad was Navy, I'm ex-Navy and hubby is retired Navy. Trust me, I'm used to it. Just trying to remind the GFs out there that there are many people in a sailor's life.

I just wanted an hour to go to lunch, or hang at the house and talk, but his GF doesn't like me. No particular reason, just that he and I have common interests she doesn't care for. She didn't want to go, so she would not let him go. What's bad is his dad, my brother, had just passed away and we needed to talk but weren't given the chance.

Here's another perspective: I wanted to spend time with my nephew when he was home on leave for the holidays, but his GF wouldn't let him have a minute alone with family. I understand the need to be with your guy as much as possible, but do try to understand there's a lot of people who love and care for him too. Please share your sailor with his family! It doesn't mean you don't love him, it means you love him enough to let his family love him too.

Emily, that's so sweet, you made me smile. But yeah, you'll want to know more when it is time to pay bills, LOL.

Advancement in the beginning stages (E-1 - E-3) goes fairly fast. Some rates allow a sailor to come out of boot camp as an E-3. I did. The E-4 can vary a lot, some rates don't take the test, E-4 is part of the A school contract. The rest gets more complicated. This link will take you to a chart that shows the many factors: the exam, time in rate, awards, evals, petty officer courses, points for taking the test and not being advanced.

I can't imagine trying to plan a wedding around Navy orders when he's not even classed up. are the families in one place? Or is there travel involved?
