Thank you so much Anti M you have been very helpful and i truly appreciate it! Do you know if he will be able to get leave during his school ?
@ Houstonswife ... yes, he can marry while on leave without penalty. Some of his instructors may give him crap, but it won't be official crap. Many senior sailors are not in favor of school marriages, but there is nothing they can do.
He may want to find out what is needed to get you on his page two and enrolled in DEERS when he returns. Or better yet, use the RAPIDS locator, see if there is a facility near home where he can do the paperwork and get your ID card right away (and that will be open). It is all electronic now anyway, so nothing says he can't do it long distance, get a jump on your health care and BAH.
MN is technically risky, but not in reality. They are on special ships, and yes, they look for mines. That means going to sea, and most are forward deployed with duty stations in places like Japan and Bahrain.
FC or ET is purely needs of the Navy. He can ask, but in the end, he has no choice. FC is a good rating though, no worries. Both schools begin with ATT, electronic prep school. A school is in Great Lakes for both, nice and long. Spouses can move there. All C schools are located somewhere else, often CA or VA. FCs go to specific weapons system schools, ETs can have darn near anything their new command requires.
ETs work on electronic systems, usually communications or radar, and a few other things. FC work on and operate missile weapons firing systems. Both are seagoing rates, but ETs get better shore duty. Expect a sea billet to begin with.
Daily life is doing preventive maintenance, plus standing duty however often that is (varies by command). And cleaning, and being on call to fix your gear or system. Usually a day job on shore.
On ship there are also qualifications and earning the warfare pin, and whatever drills and watches are required. And cleaning or cranking (helping in kitchen or laundry, maybe for junior sailors).
A sea tour is 48 months, but that only means he is assigned to the same ship or unit for that long. How often he goes to sea depends on what the ship is doing. Sea trials, exercises, and underways are days or weeks, maybe a month or so. Deployments are longer, six to eight months, usually every other year. This can be extended if there is a need. Or his ship could be in dry dock. No way to know until he gets orders.
This is all very general info.
What does he want to know? I was an ET, so was my husband, and so is my friend who is still active duty. About the school? The daily job? Duty stations?
