I'm a Navy Wife and I created this group back when I was a girlfriend and my now husband had gone to bootcamp. Its funny because i joined this website when they had under 50 members. This website has been sooooo helpful and I met so many people on here that gave great advice. I made this group so that we could all come together and give eachother advice and share ideas. I see that this group is growing more and more by the day, Im happy to see that because so many wives/fiances/and girlfriends are clueless when it comes the military lifestyle. Not knowing what to expect and not knowing about deployments, bootcamp, duty stations, etc. I want this to be the place you all recommend because so many people on this site are knowledgeable and very helpful. Once again thanks for joining my group and i hope you get all the information you need. I dont get to log on as much as i used to but i try my best to get on here. So if u have any questions feel free to make a discussion topic and Im positive that it will get answered if not, inbox me :-) Take Care ♥

Hello everyone!

My fiance left for OCS last week, but unfortunately he was rolled and will now start with the 10-18 class. Looking forward to getting to know some of you and read up on any information that may be offered on here!

You are only allowed 4 tickets per recruit period as names are given to the Navy. You can’t have anyone else’s spaces. Be lucky my husband was only allowed 3 at his graduation. So pick and choose who can go. Other wise the rest of the family can watch the graduation at the hotel or chapel if it’s still open.

Hello Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone else has a spouse that has recently left for bootcamp. I’m having a much harder time dealing with him being gone and having no contact than I thought I would be. I don’t know how I’m going to ever get through a deployment if I can barley handle 2 months then the extra 3 of training just hoping that time flys.

JWife, I'd recommend finding your spouse's PIR group on this page too as it'll be more active with family from the same PIR group.

Phone calls vary widely. I got a call every week when my husband was in, but some divisions only get 3 phone calls total, "I'm here" which it sounds like you got, one about halfway through, and the "I'm a sailor" call after they complete battlestations (about a week or less before they graduate). I know you miss your spouse, but know that no news is good news. If anything ever goes wrong, one of the first things they'll do is call you or have him/her call you.

As for letters, the first one will depend on how long he's processing (in P-Days). My husband spent 3 days in P-Days, so he could start sending letters the following Sunday, I spent a little over a week in P-Days, and there is no "holiday routine" on sundays in P-Days, which is when they're allowed to write, so mine took longer to start arriving. They're only allowed to write once a week on Sunday mornings, but many also write in secret after taps if they can find the energy to stay up…it's really hard to stay up, you're so tired. Anyway, I'd say anywhere from 1-3 weeks from when he left you'll start getting them. Hang in there!

Hi Jwife, my husband’s PIR is 1/19, the Friday after. I was fortunate to get a phone call from my husband because they saw it was our first wedding anniversary this past Friday. When I spoke to him, and he told me that he would be able to send letters next Sunday. I’m not sure when you will start receiving letters, but it’s possible your husband will start sending them soon. Hang in there! I know it’s tough. Try to stay busy. Feel free to message me if you need to vent.

Is there anyone on here whose spouse's PIR is 01/12!??
Comment by Allison on December 3, 2017 at 2:14am
Yup! You absolutely can send small appropriate photos and paper crafts. I used to keep one in my bra all the time of my husband (you're not allowed to have anything in your pockets or backpack unless it's part of training). My aunt used Postagram to send me pictures, they come about postcard sized, but the photo pops out to wallet size with the photo on the front and the message printed again but smaller on the back, so I could toss that in my drawer and throw the bigger card out to save space. I wish I had known about that when my husband went, it's super convenient, just an app on your phone that you can upload photos to and it sends right away. I hand made my husband an address book while he was in basic. I used pocket pages, so I collected everyone's addresses and put them on one side of the page, on the other I put a short note of encouragement they had written him, and then in the pocket I put pictures of them that they thought would remind my husband of a happy memory or something funny. The whole thing could fit in a pocket if it needed to, so it took up hardly any space in his drawer. It took a few hours to make, handsewing pages and then leather binding it, but if you have a lot of time to kill, it's a fun project and it's actually not too difficult, just time consuming. That's about all you can send. Address book and paper letters/pictures. You could mail stamps/phone cards, but they can buy all that at the NEX, so there's really no point. You could mail money, but you're not supposed to, and they don't need it. They have money deducted from their first paycheck specifically onto a NEX gift card, and that can go a long way depending on how much they need, and then they'll have money in their account to spend by the time they run out of that. They are also issued a stationary set and stamps when they're processed, so he has that until he has to buy more, but it lasts awhile, and like anti m said, they have to use what is at the NEX anyway. Sometimes my husband wrote me on other paper, depended on what RDC he had when he was writing it.
Comment by Anti M on December 2, 2017 at 8:53pm

He will get envelopes and stationary there, they make them use the stuff they can buy at the NEX, so everyone has the same thing.  You can send stamps, he probably got nervous and didn't think to put them in his wallet.

It is alright to send small photos.  He will need to keep them in a small drawer for personal items, so to save space, you can print them on paper and write a letter around the pictures.
