I'm a Navy Wife and I created this group back when I was a girlfriend and my now husband had gone to bootcamp. Its funny because i joined this website when they had under 50 members. This website has been sooooo helpful and I met so many people on here that gave great advice. I made this group so that we could all come together and give eachother advice and share ideas. I see that this group is growing more and more by the day, Im happy to see that because so many wives/fiances/and girlfriends are clueless when it comes the military lifestyle. Not knowing what to expect and not knowing about deployments, bootcamp, duty stations, etc. I want this to be the place you all recommend because so many people on this site are knowledgeable and very helpful. Once again thanks for joining my group and i hope you get all the information you need. I dont get to log on as much as i used to but i try my best to get on here. So if u have any questions feel free to make a discussion topic and Im positive that it will get answered if not, inbox me :-) Take Care ♥

Hi all!! I come from a non-military fam and my boyfriend left for BC on Monday... We received his civilian clothing and phone in a box, and are awaiting the arrival of his letter. However, i am impatient and want to know more details asap. My major question, as silly as it seems, is what can we send our sailors in their letters? I was once told that we could put small photographs in them, as long as they were "appropriate" obviously. Is that true? Or should I refrain from doing so... also, my sailor was made to send his envelopes and stamps home, they came in the box. Can I send him a big envelope containing paper, stamps, envelopes? Thank you to whomever takes the time to answer me :)

Stephanie, I hope your visit was fun and joyful!

In my long experience, all bases have a dress code, even for dependents and visitors.  It is enforcement which varies.  Great Lakes is a training base, so likely to be one of the stricter areas.  In Japan, they were very strict.  Big CONUS bases tend to ignore dependent dress as it is difficult to enforce.

Michael, no need to be rude. I'm aware people still wear what they want, and there are some exceptions like leggings at the gym or swimsuits at the lake, but this was information given to me by the ombudsman and the commander in our compass class, which is a resource for navy spouses to learn about navy heritage, traditions, customs, resources, and just navy life in general…at any command. I was just sharing information I received from what I would consider to be a legitimate source. Rather than mock my answer, why don't you provide your own thoughtful response from your experience to Stephanie's question?

What are you talking about. I live on base and women here wear what they want to wear. I see leggings belly’s showing, two pieces, whatever as long as your not dressing like a hooker your fine and how you are talking you sound like a decent girl so you have no issues on what your gonna wear. There is no dress code. Lol funniest thing I ever read. I just think most people just know what they can and can’t wear.

Oops. Stephanie, I thought this was a different group just for Great Lakes haha. 4 Bs still apply, but you'd probably be able to get away with leggings at most other bases, it's still technically not okay…but like at our last base, half of the compass leaders showed up in leggings/athletic pants and then told us they "weren't allowed" lol.

Stephanie, the rule for Navy bases and events is best remembered as the 4 Bs: no belly, butt, boobs, or back. Leggings are actually not okay, especially without a long shirt, this rule is more important for sailors, but I would be conscious of it. I wear leggings around bases all the time, I just make sure my shirt covers my butt. Great Lakes is more strict than other bases…there's not as much life happening on it since it's almost all training, so they aren't as nice about quick runs to the NEX in yoga pants and stuff. My friend was 8 months pregnant in July heat and told to put on a sweater for wearing a summer dress at the lake. It was totally tasteful, obviously she wasn't feeling sexy haha, but they did say something to her anyway. Anyway, sweaters and jeans, including skinny jeans, are fine. It will be VERY cold unless you're from a cold place, so lots of layers and boots and/or shoes with a grip.
Comment by DieselLady on November 20, 2017 at 4:20pm
@stephanie. Hey girl! It’s not a huge deal what you wear on base. Jeans and a sweater is totally fine! I wear leggings all the time. Just don’t wear anything that would embarrass yourself or your sailor :)

Hey everyone! Need a little help here. Going to visit my boyfriend for thanksgiving, and going on base. What should I wear? I'm been seeing no leggings and ripped jeans, but other than that, I haven't seen many other guidelines. is sweaters and jeans fine? Or what isn't gonna make me look like I don't belong, I want to fit in as much as possible! Thanks:)

Hi Dani! I'm on the same boat you are, keeping busy has worked for me with work and school, writing to him everyday really helps me cope too. Another thing I've started doing is online and regular shopping, it's bad lol but a good distraction.
I know it's hard, but once you keep busy you realize how fast the time passes and already closer to seeing your SR! If you ever want to talk or just vent feel free to send me a message :)
