I'm a Navy Wife and I created this group back when I was a girlfriend and my now husband had gone to bootcamp. Its funny because i joined this website when they had under 50 members. This website has been sooooo helpful and I met so many people on here that gave great advice. I made this group so that we could all come together and give eachother advice and share ideas. I see that this group is growing more and more by the day, Im happy to see that because so many wives/fiances/and girlfriends are clueless when it comes the military lifestyle. Not knowing what to expect and not knowing about deployments, bootcamp, duty stations, etc. I want this to be the place you all recommend because so many people on this site are knowledgeable and very helpful. Once again thanks for joining my group and i hope you get all the information you need. I dont get to log on as much as i used to but i try my best to get on here. So if u have any questions feel free to make a discussion topic and Im positive that it will get answered if not, inbox me :-) Take Care ♥

emmiec,  my husband is currently deployed as well. He has 2 types of ports they hit, working ports and liberty ports. Liberty ports are like what Anti M described, as long as they don't have duty (they can't leave the ship at all), they are allowed off the ship to explore the city they're in. They can do sight-seeing, shopping, find cafes/restaurants with wifi and Skype family & friends. They just have to be back to the ship by a certain time. If they have duty, they have to stay on the ship and can't leave. Duty sections vary by ship but my husband usually has at least one day in each liberty port that he can explore.

Working ports are when they are in port but have regular working days. Once liberty is called for the day & they're done working they can leave the ship and go to restaurants or cafes for dinner or wifi. On Sundays, they still have their holiday so as long as they don't have duty again, it's like a free day for them. They don't usually get to do much exploring at these ones since they still have to work all day. Usually at these ones my husband will get off the ship for dinner with his buddies and we'll get to Skype or Facetime for a bit but he doesn't get to do all the sightseeing and exploring like at the liberty ports.

That was so helpful..GL is 241 miles from were we are from. Im willing to travel that. Anti M

If you mean "in port" while deployed, then he probably will have daytime  liberty, enough to see the sights, eat, maybe find a compute or phone connection.

If you mean "homeport", where the ship is stationed at a Navy base, then his schedule will pretty much be like a day job with some duty days.  A few do work shifts, but they get a fairly normal amount of time off.  Work days run 8 to 10 hours, although in some situations the work continues until the job is done. On shore duty, I'd work "regular" days with weekends off and the occasional duty day, for months on end, then an emergency would happen and I'd put in 72 hours straight (with catnaps behind the gear racks).

They do get weekends off in A school, except when they have duty. They can stay out overnights in phase three of liberty, otherwise they have a nightly curfew.  They may only travel 300 miles away, so you need to figure out your "4 hours" in miles.

Here is the current liberty phase information.

Hey anti M. Or anyone else! I have a question. Since my husband immediately went to his deployed ship after a school I have a question about what his days will be like in port. Will it be 8 hour days? 12 hour days? Does he get days off? Just curious. Thanks in advance!
Comment by Anti M on March 2, 2014 at 10:42am

Oh, and if they are overseas, they;d be more likely to get the entire month because travel can be so expensive and take so long to get home.

Comment by Anti M on March 2, 2014 at 10:41am

Yes, and no.   The answer varies by where they are stationed and what they are doing.  About the only "guaranteed" leave is the holiday stand down in A school.

Yes, they earn 30 days of paid leave each year.  Yes, they must take leave to travel away from their base/command (recall limits are usually ~300 miles).   However, getting the full 30 days in one shot is not always possible.  Leave can only be granted when there is an opportunity, not during training or when there is no one to take their place.  Usually they get a week or so after A school.  Once they get to their first command, they have qualifications and so on, and might not get to take leave for some time.  Usually they get to take a week or two right before or after a deployment.  There are other types of leaves, emergency, paternity, convalescent, house hunting.

Also, if they are in port, you can go visit them, and spend their liberty time with them.  Often they have regular working hours while in port (again, depends on their job/command), so nothing would stop you from spending a three day weekend with your sailor.  Even of they have duty, they can usually swap with someone else.

Is it true that I will only see my "soon to be Sailor" 30 days out of the year. Are that's the days that are guaranteed him being home?
Comment by abuon18 on March 1, 2014 at 7:17pm
He will not get in trouble if you get married in A school as long as he gets the proper permission & goes through the proper channels, which is different for each A school command & once he gets there his command will tell him what needs to be done.

He WILL get in trouble if you get married the weekend he graduates boot camp and he WILL get in trouble if he gets married in A school without going through the proper procedures.
