Allison - my DIL bought a used organ on Craigslist when she got to my son's first duty station & then plans to sell it when they move.  She figures whatever she might lose in value will be less than the cost of renting & shipping.  They rented a u-haul & got friends to help.  Of course a piano would need tuning etc after the move.  They plan on doing this every time they move.  My local craigslist has several upright/console pianos for under $500.

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if there are any pianists on here who can help me understand my options within military life. I know this is like a teeny tiny little problem compared to all the other stuff that comes up on here, but I just wanted to make sure I'm not limiting myself to only one option. I have never had to rent a piano before, I've always either owned one or had access to a studio like when I was in university. I'm not opposed to the idea because I'll do what I have to in order to play music, but I just want to know if anyone has been successful with owning a piano. I'm not talking about like a grand piano here or anything, I currently own an upright. It just seems like after all the delivery and pickup fees, plus paying monthly rental fees, over the next few years I'll have paid for another piano or two, and the store credits offered after so many months of rental are not really valuable to me as I may or may not be in the area again to use it. On the other side of things though, paying to move the piano over the years will probably cost more than the piano too. It's not a really big deal either way because like I said, I will do what I have to. I guess I just want to know what other people have decided to do in this situation. Yes, I also have an electric piano and a keyboard, and I will have the keyboard with me, but I prefer the feel of the acoustic.

I would love to hear what decisions you guys might have made and how they have turned out for you over the years if possible.

I do too!!! It gives you a piece of mind when security rides around and officers. Like, I said nowhere is safe you just have to do pros and cons and go with the least cons. But from experience BM is not bad.

Oh ok, I'm sorry I might of misread. I just know that if the place was advertised for $995 then you should get the difference back, but when your BAH goes up they will take it no matter what. The place we lived was I believe $1350 at first but every time BAH would go up for higher rank or whatever they took it all. They cover electric, so that may be why. I never really understood why they do this but I think it was worth it. We never paid for electric Bc we didn't go over. We had a 3 bed, 2 1/2 bath, garage, nice size laundry room and pantry, yard, dining room, another extra area that can be used for whatever you would like and the livingroom. I'm not sure about the other communities. I did look into a couple more but a couple are on the actual base itself and we didn't want to do that. Like I said Ben Moreell is not that bad, nowhere is completely safe. Just keep your car doors locked and you will be fine. Most of the times its kids playing around and trying to steal stuff of cars. Make sure nothing is in plain site. We drove around for like a week straight at night checking the neighborhood out before moving there. I think it's smart to do for any place that you move to. People had their blinds open at like 11 pm at night, so I said to myself it can't be that bad lol. We lived in VA years ago and the commute was crazy for my husband. So, if he's at Portsmouth right now it would be great to live closer but just remember the ship won't always be there, so maybe find something neutral. I used to depise going to Portsmouth for appointments. I'm going to give you the number to Lincoln so you can call and see about the BAH Bc I'm totally sure but I know in our case, no matter what the price was in the beginning that all BAH would be taken eventually.

You know I feel th same way. I have read so many bad reports at Ben moreell then I start looking around. So we are looking into midway manor because I need a good school system. It be nice if there was more to find out what's nice and safe with good schools

@NavyWife2011 How do they justify taking all the BAH if they're advertising flat rate rents? Is it better to choose a unit that they automatically say will use all of BAH? I'm having a hard time figuring out which community is best. There seems to be so many bad reviews for each community I like, and not being familiar with the area, I don't know which ones are safe. I've heard people say Portsmouth is really bad, and others say they love living there, and have had no problems. My husband will be working in the shipyard when he returns so we'd like to keep the commute down as we hear that traffic is a nightmare. But if we can find a safer/nicer community we would rather him drive a little bit. I was looking at Wadsworth Shores, Stanley Court, Castle Acres, Willoughby Bay...but I'm open to other suggestions!

From experience, Ben Moreell is not bad at all. I know some people may say that it is and I even had reservations before moving there. I stayed to myself, but had some good neighbors on my street. As far as BAH, Lincoln will take it. All of it LOL :-(! I know it's a bummer, but the homes are really nice. Let me know if you have any other questions. Happy Moving!!!
