lukesmom: They are not allowed to go further than 250 miles from GL base without submitting leave chit and taking actual leave.

When my son was at GL in December 09, they submitted leave chit first of December and they were told leave dates within 7-10 days......They were told to buy tickets leaving after 2 PM on leave date....but were sent to airport at 6 AM that day.....we bought tickets about 2 weeks ahead of leave date...found good flights/prices on Tuesday and Wednesdays...if you buy tickets ahead of knowing actual dates, be sure to buy refundable flights leaving after 2 PM....GL provides buses to O'Hare and Midway for a small fee...they must sign up for these buses before leave date. Return flight should be early in day in case of flight delays....they cannot return to base early...they have to arrive on base the last day of leave...hope this helps.....lots of things to worry about on the day they leave base and the day they arrive back....My son's flight home was delayed several hours due to snow in GL, Atlanta and snow in Mississippi...who would have thought snow delays in Mississippi.....we're not used to snow here...but the 2 times he flew home from GL, he had snow delays in GL, Atlanta, and Mississippi.

My son is new at GL A school. IS it true that they cannot go for more than 250 miles for weekend?
And also, we all (brother, sister, mom) want to go visit with him sept 10 for the weekend. Can I safely make plane reservatioins now? Is liberty granted normally or is it a very special treat, like the phone calls in bc? I don't wnat to make reservations and not be able to see him! thanks

ProudMom, yes , unfortunately that is normal and No, the Navy won't help him. He needs to lock up anything he doesn't want "borrowed".

They have to put in for a leave and then wait for an answer. My sailor graduated A school last month and is on hold in GL, she is coming home on leave next week.

Charles' Mom, IC is Interior communications which has to do with telephone, fire alarm and electronic maintenance, they work on and maintain radars, all the fiber optics, and entertainment systems. I know they will get more information as they get closer to the end of A school.

Josh's mom.......yes it does sound like they are in the same arena...Charles rating is GSM (Gas Turbine Diesel Mechanic )....I have no idea what happens after the 27th........and asking Charles didn't help, he doesn't know yet either....What is IC?

Charles mom, yes my son is at GL A school. His rate is IC and he is scheduled to finish the 27th also....Josh will be going to C school next but we do not have any idea as to where. What rate is Charles, sounds like they are on the same schedule?
