You all must know how it goes, we have possible orders to Guam, but don't count on it until you have it in writing.  So anyway, it looks like we may be moving to Guam in January and I am trying to find out as much information as possible.  My hubby has been in the Navy for 10 years, we have 3 kids 7, 3 and 1.  We have lived in WA and SC, so this will be an exciting new adventure for us.  So anything you can tell me would be awesome!  What is base housing like?  What neighborhoods should we request?  I was told to try to get a house on the Air Force base because it is nicer, is that true?  How does the climate compare to South Carolina?  We have some friends from WA that went out there for a port stop and only have bad things to say, but then I have some acquaintances who lived there and said they loved it.  If this does happen, it looks like we will be on the Houston, any wives out there from that boat?   Thank you!!

Hello!
My son is currently based in Guam but is now in Japan flying off the Carl Brashear. Joshua's first comment to us was "It's gorgeous here"! There are tons of water sports and outdoor sports. Remember, it is the Hawaii of the Orient. Josh says trhe Airforce base is larger and has more amenities. I'm not sure about the housing arrangements for enlisted sailors but there will be many along who can help you with this. Guam also has the largest Walmart in the US (maybe the world :) ). You should also plan on making as many trips to different places/countries as you can. This opportunity will probably not come along again, so pack up those 3 "young-uns" and travel, travel, travel. Anything is what you make of it and I know you will have a wonderful experience.

Thank you, I know it is going to be an amazing experience, and I am ready for the adventure. I was a little scared at first, but I have spent hours researching Guam, and it looks like paradise. I love all outdoor activities, but the beach and the water are my favorite. I am having a tough time finding out the facts about where to live, a lot of people I know only visited there, and are very very jaded. They don't have a lot of nice things to say, I have met a few people online that do have good things to say, but not a lot of advice about housing. I know we will be getting a 4 bedroom because we have so many kids. I know we will be able to request a neighborhood, but I have no idea which one to ask for. How close are the schools? Parks? My oldest will be in 2nd grade, so I would like him to be able to ride the bus or walk to school. Packing up all the little ones in the morning is a huge job just to drive him to school (I will do it if it is necessary, but I prefer not to).
Largest KMart Carol. When we went to visit our daughter, we found it to be a wonderfull place.
Base housing is very nice here and for larger families like yours their is a special neighborhood with newly upgraded homes. I live in Harbor View and we have a 2 bedroom 1 1/2bath 2 story home with a garage, laundry room and plenty of closets. It has a decent back porch and yard and a playground right behind us. They just installed huge canopies over the playground too so for part of the day there is some shade. They are maniacal about maintaining the homes and grounds too, so they are in great shape. Felt like no one lived here before us. I think there are pictures from when we moved in on my page?
Oh - I just read your question about schools. There is a big school right here on Big Navy Base (where the neighborhood I mentioned is).And there are plenty of nearby bus stops. I do not have children so I can't be much more help than that on the topic!

I think the larger homes I mentioned are "Bay View". They are very colorful, kind of like gingerbread homes compared to the other homes. There is a playground, basketball court and (I think) tennis court in that community. Here is the phone number for the Housing Office on Big Navy: 671-333-2081 or 2088.

It is very hot after 8AM here til about 6PM and currently is raining most of the time. By hot I mean about 85-93 degrees and there is often a breeze. I don't mind the rain because it gives me more cloudy time for dog walking!
Thank you so much!
You are welcome! Feel free to message me with any questions!
OOPS, Kalena - thanks for the clarification! Tend to get my "marts" mixed up!! :)

Not sure how to answer this except about the weather. My family were on Guam when I was a very little girl, what I remember is hot and humid (Guam is 500 miles north of the equator). You didn't go barefoot outside or wear shoes inside, I think it had something to do with bacteria. Not sure. I was about 6 when we left. I remember that I Did love it there though. Best of luck on your adventure.
