Hi Thelma if you sterilize your jars in your dishwasher or in boiling water, they will be good for one year. If you just hand wash your jars in hot soapy water & rinse them with hot water, they will be good for 6 months.

Kathleeng that may be something to experiment with. You just might be able to do those in jars as well.

Kathleeng I'm so happy that you are going to try this. Spray inside the jars with cooking spray & wipe off the rim of the jars so they seal properly. Fill the pint size wide-mouth jars just a tad bit more than half way. Bake at 325 degrees for 45 minutes. Boil lids before end of bakink time & seal them immediately after removing from oven. Just smash the top of the bread down into the jar. Your son will love, love, love getting these. Happy baking!

Hi Ladies! Nice to hear from you all. I hope everyone has made their cakes in a jar. I haven't tried it yet but looks pretty simple, fun and yummy!! My kind of  thing!

Hope all sailors are doing well!!

Someone said they make pies in jars too? Can you please tell me how to do that?
Comment by Rhonda on November 20, 2013 at 7:26pm
kathleeng you can make everything from scratch, that's what I do. It taste so much better & lasts just as long. The only thing that you will probably have to modify is the oven temperature & baking time. It will be different baking them in the jars.

kathleeng these do make great gifts. You could even make up some gift baskets with different flavors in each basket.

Hi kathleeng, yes I bake banana nut bread, pumpkin bread, brownies, pumpkin pie & apple pie in mason jars. I send them to my son & I also sell them. They keep for six months if you wash the jars in hot soapy water. If you sterilize the jars in your dishwasher they are good for one year.
I heard from my son yesterday morning & was happy to hear he's doing good. I hope you all have a great day & hear from your loved ones soon.

I sent my cakes in a jar wrapped in bubble wrap- just make sure and pack tight so nothing moves around. My son got his package in 10 days, said the cakes were very good. I think next time I will try some brownies to send him. I also message on FB, and I know that is how he and his girlfriend communicate most of the time, saves on minutes on the phone. For Christmas I got my son some UnderArmor underwear they are pricy but wear forever. I got some for my nephew when he was in Iraq and he said he was ruined for life, and would never wear any others! My son is still on ship so no room for much, so I guess I will send him an amazon gift card to go along with them. Hate to think about Christmas without him, but he is doing great, so seeing him be successful is a great present for me! Hope everyone has a great week!
