Shelbysmom,  What is your daughters rate?  My son texted me the other night & said that he "f'n loves his life"! I was so relieved. His sponser was showing him around yesterday & he too was going car shopping. He ran into a girl that he had met @ Corpsman school & graduated before him & he also has a friend stationed there from back home ( although they haven't met up yet). He's pretty excited about being there. As for being @ the airport, we were issued gate passes & were able to go right to the boarding area & wait w/him unilt he got on the plane. We just told them that he was going overseas.. I hope everything goes well & your daughter adjusts to everything. Where are you from?  Take care & good luck!!

Hi Devins mom, I too just went through the same thing on Valentines Day no less. I had to put My beautiful daughter b arely 18 on a plane to Guam to live for the next 3 years.  It was so hard.  She desperately didn't want to go which made it even harder.  She cried as security told her we couldn't go with her through the checkpoint.  We both cried as I had to walk away knowing it will be a long time til I see her again.  The layover was so stressful like you said.  She didn't know what to do or where to go.  The layover was so long about 14 hours I think.  When she arrived in Guam she was determined not to like it.  I told her to give it a chance but she was just upset.  To my relief a few days went by and things started getting better for her.  She actually bought a new car the other day.  lol   I miss her and yes I was sick to my stomache as well.  then the tsunami warning came and OMG really sick to my stomache.  Thank God it passed them.  Take care and best wishes and prayers go out to you and all the Navy Moms.

Thank you everyone! My son called when he arrived & he said all went well. Just waiting now to here from him again! In the meantime, today we are celebrating his sisters "Sweet 16" birthday!  Off to get her driving permit after school. Yhis has been quite the week!

If he is on base he should have heard the sirens they were super LOUD and started at like 3 pm. I dont know how he could not have heard them. We live about 10 mins away from base and could hear them at our house. The closest place that is considered high ground is Nimitz Hill which is where we live. The hospital is up on the top of the hill he should know where that is. If they had actually evacuated the base he would have known for sure. The MP's would come by and knocked on doors telling people to leave.  You can also sign up with some website that will send you text alerts if there are warnings of any kind. I will see if I can find it again.

A few hrs ago I did just about the hardest thing that I've ever had to do....I put my 18 yr old son on a plane to Guam. We left our house around 12:30 am this morning & my daughter & I just got home (11:00am). I am physically & emotionaly drained. I just wish he didn't have a lay-over in Tokyo!  The thought of it all just makes me sick to my stomach.  My prayers are w/him, all of our other US service members, & everyone else affected by this terrible disaster.

He should look at his itinerary there is a number on it he can call if there are any issues. I am positive the Tokyo airport is up and running though, we had some people from our ship fly over on commercial airlines to help out with the nuclear stuff. They flew into Tokyo. He can also call the SATO office on base and see if they want him to do anything special.

David (& Kathi), thanks for the info. We have checked his flight status & it's still on track. We discussed trying to get it re-routed but because the Navy is the one who bought the tickets originally, he said it'd be a nightmare not to mention expensive to try to get them changed,  All I can do is hope & pray for the best.
