Hello all!

I contacted the METC Navy office today regarding some questions I had about what the student's are allowed to have/not allowed to have and this is the information I got.  I hope this helps.

If your sailor is getting into SA over the weekend, they will be allowed liberty ONCE they have checked in at the base and with their instructor.  The officer said that they can not go further than 50 miles from the base, and will need to check in on Sunday evening, usually by 8pm / 2000 military time.  They will begin their briefings on Monday morning.

They are allowed cell phones and laptops, but if they don't have one, they have a computer lab to use for homework and studying.  They just can't have these items in class.

As stated in other discussions, the first two weeks is usually just them getting familiar with the base, briefings on rules, getting books and materials, etc.  After they have enough sailors for a class, they begin Phase I - which is EMT training and lasts 4 weeks.  The officer I talked to said that this is when they lose the most students.  It's fast-paced and most students are more concerned with liberty than studying.  They are not allowed liberty during this phase, but can make phone calls home.  The class standing at the end of this phase will determine what order they get to pick their orders for duty stations.  For example, the best grade average gets first pick from the billets (or duty stations jobs available) that are open at that time.  The lowest grade point average would be stuck with what hasn't been picked by everyone else.  The only time they won't pick a billet is if they are going on to another school in SA or if they have Field Medic training listed on their contract.  Those sailors would go to that additional training first, and then pick from the new list of billets.

They can be eligible for liberty during Phase II of training as long as their grades are up and they don't have watch.

As far as civilian clothes go, they can wear them, but the restrictions are different according to where they are in their training.  Like the liberty rules, it changes with each Phase.  In Phase I, they can wear them only in their room, but not around the base.  The officer said there isn't really a rule for Phase II, since it has changed with every class, but they will be told once they finish Phase I of training.

If you have some questions you can't find the answer to, here is the phone number of the Navy office at the base...(210) 808-1445.

Have a great New Year everyone!

I think it is different with each CO as well. My son, who arrived in SA last month, was Phased-up the week after they got there and they only started classes this past week. They are allowed to wear civilian clothes off base in Phase ll as well.
