Interior Communications Electrician

Interior Communications Electricians (ICs) install, maintain and repair the equipment needed for interior communications within ships and shore facilities. These communication systems include public address systems, interior telephone systems, alarm systems, engine telegraphs to communicate orders for changes in engine speed from the bridge (ship's command station) to the engine room, certain kinds of ship control and equipment monitoring devices, the ship's gyrocompass, the rudder position indicator, audio-visual equipment for the ship's TV entertainment systems, advanced navigation and various other equipment.

The duties performed by IC's include:

Maintaining and repairing interior communications systems;
Preparing and interpreting blueprints, wiring diagrams and sketches;
Installing and inspecting dry cell and storage batteries;
Recharging wet cell batteries;
Testing interior communications and gyrocompass equipment;
Installing telephone and other communications circuits, boxes, switchboards and bell buzzer systems;
Maintaining plotters and dead reckoning equipment;
Maintaining and operating TV systems;

Working Environment :

People in the IC rating work in many different situations, at sea and ashore. While most of their work is performed indoors, it may be in a clean or dirty environment of a shop-like nature, and it may be in any kind of climate or temperature. IC's usually work closely with others. Most systems IC's work on is of the modern solid state electronic type, making the rating a very technical profession.

A-School Information:

Great Lakes, IL -- 10 weeks

Some Interior Communications Electricians who graduate from "A" school go on to advanced training courses such as gyrocompass and advanced TV maintenance. Others are assigned to duty stations where they can continue learning their rating through on-the-job training.

C-Schools (Advanced Specialized Training):

Shipboard Information, Training, and Entertainment (SITE)

Integrated Launch And Recovery Television Surveillance (ILARTS)

Class Ship Interior Communications Subsystems Technician (FFG-7SS)

Fiber Optic Data Multiplex System Operation and Maintenance (FODMS)

Data Multiplex System (DMS)

Vertical and Short Take-Off and Landing Optical Landing System (VSTOL)

Stabilized Gyrocompass Maintenance (WSN)

My son well is not a shopper so I didnt get too much at the NEX he said I can send it to you yea sure . I didnt  realize the great prices on the Navy gear.

He visited Chicago Sat  the 8th had a great time took the train. Now he is on hold said its day by day  I think  he is accepting the waiting.  It was good to hear his voice. Our local paper had writeup about his graduation. A neighbor told me or I wouldnt have known.

Many blessings to everyone on this glorious Sunday morning

irene(9/174) My son just called today! He calls about once a week, but he says that now he has reported to his ship he may not get to call as much. He uses an app that needs wi-fi and wi-fi on the ship is just not there (all the steel and stuff).

Jana, hope you didn't go broke in the NEX. There is so much Navy Mom stuff that you just want it all! I came home with 2 shirts for me. We also brought one for his dad, stuff for his brothers & sister, three hats and a variety of other things.

Hi ladies.  I hope you and your sailors are doing good today.

Jana, I am glad you had a good time.  I can't wait to get my dvd in the mail so I can watch it all again.

Paige, you always have a way with words.  Have you ever thought of being a defense attorney?  You are right, we worry less when they are happy.  When Billy deploys will he be gone for six months?  What happens to his apartment?

Louisville Mom, how often do you get to talk to your son?  Jen's roommate is from the Phillipines so a couple of times a week she is talking very low around 3:00 a.m.

Ladies My son is awesome he wore his uniform with pride and respect.  We  talked and talked and ate GOOD food. My  daughter son in law and 5 month old granddaughter came. She was soo good at the PIR a little miracle. Steven was delighted to see them.  He hugged my husband and I  at the same time. No favorites.  We even went to the NEX  He is on the USS England.  We are texting  he not much of a talker unless necessary. But i will take  anything

The journey continues for all our Sailors

irene (9/174) He will be there for three years!  ;;-(

This makes me happy :-0 and sad :-{ at the same time. I know he is alright, but when you have raised six kids the house just seems so quite. (only 2 left at home and they are both over 18). Having a moment, over it, time to get busy with the day. Have a good one!

Hi Louisville Mom.  I am glad your son loves it in Japan.  How long will he be there?  Jen has met so many people and really enjoys it so far.  One of the boys from her dorm just got orders to go to Bahrain.  She is hoping to go some place exciting too.

I hope everyone is doing good today.

@irene (9/174) So happy Jen has started ATT school. She will learn a lot. It may be a while before she starts A-school. They have to have enough Sailors  for a class.I'm sure she will keep you informed. My son is station in Japan on the USS George Washington. He has been there only a little while. After A-school he came home for 10 days before he shipped out. He is loving it over there.

Hi Debbi.  Jen just started ATT school last week.  I am not sure when she will graduate A-school.  Are you going to the graduation?  If so, please let me know how it is.  We are planning a trip in mid-August so we can all go to Six Flags.

Louisville Mom, where is your son stationed?
