Interior Communications Electrician

Interior Communications Electricians (ICs) install, maintain and repair the equipment needed for interior communications within ships and shore facilities. These communication systems include public address systems, interior telephone systems, alarm systems, engine telegraphs to communicate orders for changes in engine speed from the bridge (ship's command station) to the engine room, certain kinds of ship control and equipment monitoring devices, the ship's gyrocompass, the rudder position indicator, audio-visual equipment for the ship's TV entertainment systems, advanced navigation and various other equipment.

The duties performed by IC's include:

Maintaining and repairing interior communications systems;
Preparing and interpreting blueprints, wiring diagrams and sketches;
Installing and inspecting dry cell and storage batteries;
Recharging wet cell batteries;
Testing interior communications and gyrocompass equipment;
Installing telephone and other communications circuits, boxes, switchboards and bell buzzer systems;
Maintaining plotters and dead reckoning equipment;
Maintaining and operating TV systems;

Working Environment :

People in the IC rating work in many different situations, at sea and ashore. While most of their work is performed indoors, it may be in a clean or dirty environment of a shop-like nature, and it may be in any kind of climate or temperature. IC's usually work closely with others. Most systems IC's work on is of the modern solid state electronic type, making the rating a very technical profession.

A-School Information:

Great Lakes, IL -- 10 weeks

Some Interior Communications Electricians who graduate from "A" school go on to advanced training courses such as gyrocompass and advanced TV maintenance. Others are assigned to duty stations where they can continue learning their rating through on-the-job training.

C-Schools (Advanced Specialized Training):

Shipboard Information, Training, and Entertainment (SITE)

Integrated Launch And Recovery Television Surveillance (ILARTS)

Class Ship Interior Communications Subsystems Technician (FFG-7SS)

Fiber Optic Data Multiplex System Operation and Maintenance (FODMS)

Data Multiplex System (DMS)

Vertical and Short Take-Off and Landing Optical Landing System (VSTOL)

Stabilized Gyrocompass Maintenance (WSN)

IC mom dml- Sorry that he still won't beable to come home, Josh is in the Franklin which is not far from the Cole. He said it is different on every ship there just depends who is in charge...he says his Chief is pretty laid back. Paige glad that your son is with you for this holiday enjoy him....MiMom that is so funny, I know Josh would have a fit if he could see how much we talk about them on here.....but it helps keep me sane.

Well...all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving tomorrow...HUGs to all of you!!!

lj1422 - I just talked to my son. He was moved from the Enterprise to the Wisconsin last night. When he talked to the new SDC today, he was told that the Christmas stand down was for 17 days, not the 15 that the Enterprise was. But he did ask for just a week again and again was told it had to be for the entire 17 days or none. So, he'll be moved to the Cole where everyone else staying over the holiday will be. He moved in with 4 other guys in this ship and they have night school. So he has the room to himself all evening. At least one of his friends from boot camp was moved into the same ship though.

ICmomdml...I talked to Josh just now and he told me that he just had some from his class just turn in their chit for the stand down. He said that technically it is to late but if he asks and since he has not been on the school side for that long he probably would get it...they try to get as many to go home as possible and he also said he can ask for a week or all of it or even 3 or 4 days. He said he might be nervous about asking because he said that when he was new he was leary about asking questions, but he said they wont yell at you for it. LOL
I am also happy to know he has a home to go to for Thanksgiving, one of the guys in his class asked all of the class to come to him and his wifes house for dinner...he was happy to be with people he knows...his family for six months anyway.

I will ask Josh about being to late to put in a chit for the stand down, I will probably talk to him tonight. Vicki, Josh has been at GL since March. He will be done with C school the first of April. I don't know about the ratio of female to males in this rate, but there are 13 in his class and 4 are female.

Thanks lj1422. I tried to talk him into coming home this past weekend when I talked to him, but he says it's too late to request the leave. He would probably come if he could take just one week, but he says they have to take the full two weeks or none. He may be confused since he's new to all this, though.

IC mom dml...I talked to Josh tonight and we got to talking about the sailors that were staying there for the holidays, I told him your son was staying there for Christmas and he told me to tell you to have him come home...6 months is a looong time in GL and anyone should go home atleast for the week of Christmas. I think Josh is home sick....and has been away for 8 months he can't wait to come home and I can't wait either so he thinks everyone should go home....I told him I would tell you. We have a very busy December with alot of Birthdays throughout my husband and my family just like you.
Stevie- I feel the same way!!!
VikkiMiMom- welcome and congrats on your new Sailor.

Wow, Happy 21st to Josh! That's awesome that he'll be home for his birthday and Christmas. My oldest son's birthday is Dec. 15. I can't believe he'll be 30 this year. And his wedding anniversary is Dec. 14, so we have a lot of celebrations in Dec. Sure gets expensive. It's a good thing tax refund time is just around the corner. I hope Andrew's duty day isn't until Sunday too, so he can have 3 days in a row.

My son told me that they have the 4 days but they will definately have a duty day one of the days...I am glad that your son took advantage of the adopt a Sailor for Thanksgiving...mine would not do it he was afraid someone would feed him something he did not like.LOL so a group of them are going out to dinner together and he has his duty day on Sunday, so he has 3 days in a row off. I hope that your son does get home for his birthday, I got lucky...Josh's 21st birthday is Dec 22nd so he will be here for the stand down...for once I am happy he was born that close to Christmas.

Sounds like he won't make it home for his birthday, but that's okay. It will probably a few weeks later in mid to late April. Is the Thanksgiving holiday just the one day on Thursday or will they have the whole weekend, Thur - Sun, unless they have a duty day? My nephew will be there in Chicago over the weekend and I don't know when to tell him to call. My son is in the Adopt a Sailor program for Thanksgiving, so he won't be able to see him on Thursday.
