Interior Communications Electrician

Interior Communications Electricians (ICs) install, maintain and repair the equipment needed for interior communications within ships and shore facilities. These communication systems include public address systems, interior telephone systems, alarm systems, engine telegraphs to communicate orders for changes in engine speed from the bridge (ship's command station) to the engine room, certain kinds of ship control and equipment monitoring devices, the ship's gyrocompass, the rudder position indicator, audio-visual equipment for the ship's TV entertainment systems, advanced navigation and various other equipment.

The duties performed by IC's include:

Maintaining and repairing interior communications systems;
Preparing and interpreting blueprints, wiring diagrams and sketches;
Installing and inspecting dry cell and storage batteries;
Recharging wet cell batteries;
Testing interior communications and gyrocompass equipment;
Installing telephone and other communications circuits, boxes, switchboards and bell buzzer systems;
Maintaining plotters and dead reckoning equipment;
Maintaining and operating TV systems;

Working Environment :

People in the IC rating work in many different situations, at sea and ashore. While most of their work is performed indoors, it may be in a clean or dirty environment of a shop-like nature, and it may be in any kind of climate or temperature. IC's usually work closely with others. Most systems IC's work on is of the modern solid state electronic type, making the rating a very technical profession.

A-School Information:

Great Lakes, IL -- 10 weeks

Some Interior Communications Electricians who graduate from "A" school go on to advanced training courses such as gyrocompass and advanced TV maintenance. Others are assigned to duty stations where they can continue learning their rating through on-the-job training.

C-Schools (Advanced Specialized Training):

Shipboard Information, Training, and Entertainment (SITE)

Integrated Launch And Recovery Television Surveillance (ILARTS)

Class Ship Interior Communications Subsystems Technician (FFG-7SS)

Fiber Optic Data Multiplex System Operation and Maintenance (FODMS)

Data Multiplex System (DMS)

Vertical and Short Take-Off and Landing Optical Landing System (VSTOL)

Stabilized Gyrocompass Maintenance (WSN)

Dyl's mom, I think you are correct that they have so many. Josh started out on days and then went to nights for ATT but his sleep schedule was so screwed up because they are so many things going on in the ship.

Buslady, my son Josh called today and said his buddy from his A school was leaving to go home and then to San Diego for his C school. His friends name was Matt and his wife was living in Detroit....just wondering?

Hi Ladies! Thanks for the responses! I'm sure I will have many more questions for you down the road! I bet you're thinking....oh, yippee! ha! My son is starting his ATT and he's been assigned to night school. Is that because they have so many classes that some go days and some go nights?

It would be great to have all the IC moms on N4M but I think alot of moms don't know what a wonderful and infomative site this is....I personally could not get through this without you wonderful Ladies and gents. I was at a volleyball game last night , AGAIN and another players sister went into bootcamp in June and her sister was at the game last night. She just finished cryptology A school and is heading to Italy in Nov. her mother was there and she does not get to many games she works nights....she had no idea about N4M so of course I informed her about it and she is going to join. Her daughter was impressed with as much as I knew about the Navy.

Buslady welcome and congrats to your sailors acheivements. Have a great time with your visit and let us know everything.

Dyl's mom- yes we do have to be so nosy....information is the key to keeping sane. Josh told me yesterday he is on hold until Nov 15th....going to try to get leave for a few days and come home...maybe. Have a great day ladies

Hi Buslady! Glad to hear from you! I would appreciate any info that you could get your hands on and share. Mom's always have to be so nosy, huh? I'm sure you're very proud of your son's accomplishments! That's so awesome that he was the highest honorary graduate! Did he say if A school was difficult or did he have prior experience in the field? Keep me posted on what you find out! and Thanks!!

Good evening ladies...I've been reading your comments regularly. My son is IC and graduated about 4 wks ago from A school at Great Lakes as highest honorary graduate from his class. He is coming home tomorrow for 9 days and is then heading out to San Diego for C school for 6 months. After C school he & his wife are going to Norfolk. I don't know too much about what his C school will entail but plan to find out as much as I can this week while he's home. Then I'll let you know what I find out about the IC rate.

I know how busy it gets with kids at home! And i also know that kids activities always trump internet time! ha! Well, hopefully Josh won't have to wait too long on hold. I know they are used to being busy so down time isn't always a good thing. So why are there so few IC's? I've been trying to figure out why there are so few in our group. Is this a very unpopular rate or what?
