Interior Communications Electricians (ICs) install, maintain and repair the equipment needed for interior communications within ships and shore facilities. These communication systems include public address systems, interior telephone systems, alarm systems, engine telegraphs to communicate orders for changes in engine speed from the bridge (ship's command station) to the engine room, certain kinds of ship control and equipment monitoring devices, the ship's gyrocompass, the rudder position indicator, audio-visual equipment for the ship's TV entertainment systems, advanced navigation and various other equipment.
The duties performed by IC's include:
Maintaining and repairing interior communications systems;
Preparing and interpreting blueprints, wiring diagrams and sketches;
Installing and inspecting dry cell and storage batteries;
Recharging wet cell batteries;
Testing interior communications and gyrocompass equipment;
Installing telephone and other communications circuits, boxes, switchboards and bell buzzer systems;
Maintaining plotters and dead reckoning equipment;
Maintaining and operating TV systems;
Working Environment :
People in the IC rating work in many different situations, at sea and ashore. While most of their work is performed indoors, it may be in a clean or dirty environment of a shop-like nature, and it may be in any kind of climate or temperature. IC's usually work closely with others. Most systems IC's work on is of the modern solid state electronic type, making the rating a very technical profession.
A-School Information:
Great Lakes, IL -- 10 weeks
Some Interior Communications Electricians who graduate from "A" school go on to advanced training courses such as gyrocompass and advanced TV maintenance. Others are assigned to duty stations where they can continue learning their rating through on-the-job training.
C-Schools (Advanced Specialized Training):
Shipboard Information, Training, and Entertainment (SITE)
Integrated Launch And Recovery Television Surveillance (ILARTS)
Class Ship Interior Communications Subsystems Technician (FFG-7SS)
Fiber Optic Data Multiplex System Operation and Maintenance (FODMS)
Data Multiplex System (DMS)
Vertical and Short Take-Off and Landing Optical Landing System (VSTOL)
Stabilized Gyrocompass Maintenance (WSN)

HI all- I haven't been on here in many months....last time, both of my sons were still in DEP. Yikes. My oldest is in GL, on hold waiting for IC -A school to start. His PIR was just 9/18 but he's getting antsy. All of the unknowns and he is just anxious to get started. Sounds like he could be there for maybe a year??? Not sure if that's the case, but with ATT school, then A school and C school- does it make sense or am I way off? My youngest son has PIR on 11/6 but he flies out to Goose Creek after graduation> We are hoping to stick around in GL any way to spend time with Sailor #1. I have read about Minesweepers & ILARTS...does anyone know if there is someplace he could research the potential "specialty" jobs that go along with the IC rating? Thanks in advance.

JANA
Hello all. Hoping this group can provide some insight. My son is currently in DEP and leaves for Boot camp in July. (I also have another in DEP, will be a Nuke, leaves in September). His rate is IC/ATF.....yes, there is very informative stuff online but I was hoping to find some others here (parents, spouses, etc...) who can shed some personal light on this actual rate. I have been in Navy Moms for a little while now, and have joined other Facebook groups that are extremely great- very supportive and full of great information. I have a couple of "nuke" groups that I am a member of as well. How relieved I was to find this group :) Thank you in advance !

One Day Closer
Hi ladies! I hope you all and your sailors are good.
Jana, I can't imagine how much you miss him. When will he be home?
Paige, I hope Billy is enjoying Maryland. I think Maryland is a beautiful state and hope he is happy there.
For an update on Jen and Justin. Jen received her written orders and is assigned to the USS Arlington. She will head back to Great Lakes mid-May for site tv school. In November she will join the fleet. She is really excited about that. Justin is still on the Eisenhower and enjoying it. Junior will be a year old in May and will be coming to live with me for a while. I am excited and nervous at the same time.
Rachel is in Navy JROTC in high school and really enjoying it. I think she is leaning towards joining the Navy after high school. We are trying to convince her to get her AA first.
I have been lucky for almost two years because I have been able to talk to Jen every day. I will be in the same boat as you all when she is deployed.
I think of you all often and hope you are doing good.
Take care.
