If he wants to talk to a machinist mate, let me know.  My son is in dry dock right now (been in Navy for over 4 years and re-enlisted last year.)

btw--we had a fantastic recruiter--and our office continues to have good ones.   But, a peer is a good idea.

Zach's mom.....one of my sailors went through the same thing.....I think that some of it has to do with all their friends are getting ready to head off to College and they aren't.....find out what his fear is and why he "thinks" that he has changed his mind.....friends, other family members etc.  My sailor actuallu wen to the recruiters office and was about to tell him ...the recruiter sat and talked with him  told him to go home and think about it for a few days and then come back.  The thing I told my sailor was this....." You begged my to sign the papers so you could enlist at 17 I aksed you if your were sure...you said yes...now I am holding you accountable for that decsion  You are now 18 and an adult  Now the Navy is holding you accountable for decision.....there will be no going back if you change your mind and not go in the Navy."  He didn't like  that I said that but end the end he said you are right.....NOW I don't know if that was right or wrong saying that to him  but he has been in for 3 years now ...it hasn't been easy but now he is doing the "fun part" and enjoying it.

It is way better to talk with a current sailor close to his age. Recruiters take a hit against their goal if they don't go, so will say anything to make that happen. A young sailor is best, they can be truthful and let him know why not to be scared. At the same time, if it really isnt for him, he needs to figure that out too, before he does go

Zach'sMom, what is his rate? It might be beneficial to talk to another sailor in the same rate...

zach's mom, I think this is VERY normal!  To be quite honest, he might have had these same feelings about going away to school also!  This is a time in there life that ALOT of changes are going on...friends going away to different schools, getting jobs, getting married, moving away, joining the service!  If I were you, I think I would ask him to write down why he wanted to go in the Navy, have him talk to his recruiter again and maybe a Sailor who has joined recently.  Some kids really know what they want to do and do it....and other kids it takes a little while longer, remember most kids going to college change their major at least once before they graduate!  Good luck, and stay calm!

we would be only too happy to chat on the phone to put any worries to rest. Also he could hear from my son just what it is like. It is only natural to be scared, it hits all of them at one point or another, my son felt like he could have thrown up, when they were 30 mins away from arriving at bc lol. He was fine.

Comment by Sanmor on July 23, 2012 at 6:04pm

no actually he doesnt have to go, they get sworn in again down at meps right before being transported to bc that day.

Comment by carols_kitchen on July 23, 2012 at 6:02pm

ewww--if he has signed the contract, does he have a choice?  It's normal to be stressed.  You can invite the recruiter to your house to speak with him and the family.  That might help.  Also, tell him he has ALLLLLL of us as Moms to support him.

Good luck.
