Salissa--My son started taking others to Charleston areas just for gas money, once he phased up and could drive off base.  In the meantime, they need to use the duty van to the mall, and they need to buddy up to take rides to the beach.  Some cabbies will gig you, others will go as cheap as they are allowed to as they are retired military.

Your sailor is also paying for his food out of his paycheck.  If you want to gift him, a card to Subway is great.  He's close to a great East Bay Deli (it's pricey, but good.)  Like others said, each one's situation is different.  They have to still pay for cell phones, and internet hookup if they have it.

Keep asking questions.

We're sending off our newest sailor to the fleet tomorrow from the Moline airport, meeting about 0930 in case anyone wants to come.  Not an official Patriot Guard Rider mission, but some of them will be there with a flag line along with a few Navy parents.

Congratulations to Jessica!

Sailssa, my first thought was--does he know for sure he can come home for a holiday?  Before spending money for airfare, he needs to know that or have the papers in hand.

Second thought--please, because of OPSEC, don't post his name, especially if it's the same last name as yours.

As far as getting to the beach, there has to be other alternatives.  If not a USO, there has to be an MWR where he can ask questions if his buddies don't know.

Sailssa....please also call a travel agent sometimes they can find you a better deal than you can on-line....they are trained for a reason and get special deals from airlines. Also as far as how much money everyone has....I don't think that we can give you real information on such a private matters. I know that my son has been in the Navy for 8 years and it sounds like it is easier for me. But this is their lives and I would hate to think that we would comment on what your young sailor is spending money on. Please don't think that the only thing they ever pay for is uniforms, every situation is different. If your sailor is requesting help in finding better resources, then our group of moms will find them for you. If you go to the Navy web site there are many answers. I just don't want to to get the wrong information.   Trust your sailor. They are the ones to know what it is going to take them to get through this transition period. and trust yourself that you raised a good sailor and it will all work out..........just not always like us moms would want it to ....I sure know that ....huggs to you and welcome

Salissa: I don't know about Goose Creek, but almost every base has buses to local areas. Your son should also check to see if there is a USO on or near his base. In Illinois, the USO has offices at both airports, Great Lakes, and Navy Pier. They often have free or reduced rate entertainment, including sports tickets, etc.

Hello!

My name is Salissa Whaley and I have a son (Will) currently at Goose Creek, SC in Nuke school.  I also have a daughter (Michelle) who will be leaving for basic on October 31st.  I have several questions....first of all-is there a good place to find airfare for my son to come home for Thanksgiving and Christmas?  He tells me he has no money to pay for airfare.  In Nuke school, I thought that they did not pay for anything but uniforms.  Does anyone know what their approximate salary is and what types of transportation is available to take them from the base to various areas near Charleston?  He tells me that it costs him $40 a trip to go to the beach, but I would think that there would be some type of shuttle service that could take those that do not have their own transportation to various places off the base.  He says that his only option is by taxi.
