NORFOLK, Va. (Aug. 24, 2011) Sailors from the guided-missile destroyer USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) load supplies as the ship makes ready to sortie in advance of Hurricane Irene. Vice Adm. Daniel Holloway, commander of U.S. Second Fleet, ordered all ships in the Hampton Roads area to set Sortie Condition Alpha. Ships in the area are expected to start departing the area early Thursday morning, Aug. 25. Irene's current track indicates it will pass off the North Carolina and Virginia coasts late Saturday as a major Category 3 hurricane.
Hi gals...one of my sailors is in Bethesda MD just out side DC he felt the earth quake but said it wasn't no big deal...well not to him but it was to his momma!! LOL
Jaqueline I too have seen the changing of the gurard and it is a moving experience..also have heard the story of the hurricane and all I can say is WOW that is serving your country and you fellow soldier.
As far as the hurricane this time...they will move the ships out of Norfolk and out to sea if they are attached to a ship...if not they have an evac plan that moves them further inland I think that is to Richland. If your sailors have a car there...tell them to get the cars far away from the base and to higher groud as far inland as they can...flooding is terrible in certain places in the Norflok area.
I'm keeping an eye on hurricane irene, my son is at Norfork. Talked to him today and he said they had a meeting today about evac, they have cancelled classes for Fri and will let them know when to evac. I am glad they have a plan in place and have told everyone where they need to go.
I bet the changing of the Honor Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers still took place at the appointed time. We got to see that last summer when we visited DC. It's very moving. My uncle (who is a DC native) told us that the Honor Guard was told that they could have the night off during a hurricaine but they refused to quit their post. They marched their 21 paces, paused 21 seconds, carried on their duties as if it were a calm, sunny day with the whole world watching. It makes my heart swell with pride just to think of it.
Glad your son is okay and that you heard from him, Beth.
