Well, I made it through the first night of his first deployment! Now if I could only make the weather get better. I think time would pass much quicker if I could be outside.

Thanks for your input on the taxes.  Both of you are correct in the sense that you don't have to file the Illinois taxes, but internal revenue recommends that you do file the form M.  My husband called them and they said by filing this form, you are showing something to them.  If they don't get anything from you for a few years then they said you might get audited.  So we are filing the form for our son just to be safe.  Again, thanks to both of you.

No harm either way I guess. Something for me to keep in mind next year :)

cool Tracy. I just know that my husband was born and raised in IL, did 20 years navy, son almost 4 years navy, and never have sent in anything, no need. No IL taxes taken out, no need to file, beauty of being from IL.

Our tax preparer told us that they still need to be filed whether they pay IL taxes or not. There is a section specifically for military pay. Ether way, we went ahead and filed them.

Comment by Sanmor on February 9, 2014 at 10:45pm

Huffymom you DO NOT file IL taxes when in the military. You file NOTHING to the state. IL is one of the few that have the exemption to the military. He does not pay il taxes so no filing needed.

Comment by TLC72 on February 9, 2014 at 10:34pm
We finally figured it out. You still file them, but need to fill out a Schedule M.
