Hi Sharri! While in bootcamp send letters everyday, they won't think he's a mama's boy. After CS school he will go to Groton, CT for BESS(basic enlisted submarine school). There is a group, Groton, CT Submarine and A school on here, come join us.

Hi any sailors heading out Tues?  Mine gets dropped off Monday at the Merrillville ofc :)

Thanks Kaye.  I am trying to find some little things to do to make some memories before he goes and to show him that I am embracing his choice in careers.  I guess it doesn't matter what kind of sub we make.  As our fist attempt at models it may not even turn out to look anything like the picture on the box :)

Sharri -

There's no way of knowing if your son will be assigned to a "fast attack" sub or a "boomer," although because there are more attacks in the fleet, there are more personnel assigned to them.

Just know that there are four classes ("groups of similarly designed") of subs right now:  Ohio (SSBN or SSGN), Los Angeles (SSN), Seawolf (SSN), and Virginia (SSN).  All the subs in a given class look like each other.  So, let him take his pick!  After all, it's about the time spent together, not what the sub looks like, right?  Hugs, k.

Ben and I thought about putting together a model submarine before he leaves.  It is something we can do together (we like to do jigsaw puzzles together) and something I can keep while he is gone to remember the fun we had doing it as well as thinking of him being on a sub.  Does anyone know of a particular type of sub that the sailors might be on?  There are so many models and we would like to find something that might possibly be close to what he will be on.

There will be lots of changes, I feel, due to the new budget issues surrounding the sequester. Since there is still relatively a lot of time before he leaves, brace yourself for the possibility of another change, maybe even two.

One thing we've learned is that nothing is really set in stone until it's actually happening!

My son is supposed to leave July 1.  He is going to be a CS on a sub and there was a possiblity that he could wait until August and be on a ship.  He just got word that that isn't happening.  He is ok with it and is just ready to go.  I was hoping for August and one more month with him home.  Oh well, I guess it would just be delaying the inevitable.

Got my first letter from my son :)  It is truly a happy day.  Received 2 envelopes but one had 3 letters in it so really I got 4 letters with different dates.

Sent my first letter to my son today, along with his brother and his sister.

Sharri - send mail, send mail, send mail!!!

Keep it light-hearted and funny, fill it with sports news, current events, etc.... they are totally cut off from the outside world and are media starved!

I usually included something about how many chores I had to do now that he wasn't there - it took the sting out of having to do a couple of hours of IT. He also enjoyed hearing about his dogs, and anything going on at home. The more the better!!
