Sharri,

First, let me say as an educator and mother, I would have given the camp counselor a comeupance he would not soon forget!

That being said, this isn't camp and he will need all of the support he can get.  He will not want to be the guy standing on line who does not get his name called, especially after a grueling or emotional day.

You, seriously, need to speak with the veteran moms within the bootcamp group.  :)

I think he is going from a camp experience.  I sent a bunch of cards at the beginning (as recommended since they were only to be gone a week).  I marked them clearly for each day but they gave them all to him the first day (calling him up individually for each one).  After the last one, the counselor said, "Can we all say Mamma's Boy?"  Ben was mortified and I was angry.  I think Ben thinks this will happen again.  That the other guys will consider him a Mamma's Boy.  I don't want to embarras him, but I don't want him left out either.

Sharri,

He hasn't been there and has no idea what he will want or NEED.  Send him a letter every day.  If he doesn't want to read it (impossible), there will be dozens of others who would love to read your letters.  :)     There are some things you do not have to discuss with him. LOL

My son doesn't leave until July.  I have been telling him about these posts and he says he doesn't want to be one of those guys that "gets a letter every day from his mommy."  So now I don't know what to do.  Write once a week?  I told him that once he gets there he should write to me and tell me how often he would like mail.  I am hoping he changes his mind about the frequency thing.  I can see not a letter every day but a couple of times a week wouldn't be over kill, would it?

My son PIR'd back in November and is currently in school at the NSTC side of Great Lakes. One of the things I did for my son was to print out funny internet "memes" (be sure they're appropriate!)  I copied and pasted a bunch on one page. He said that all the other recruits in his division looked forward to his mail call as much as he did.  With the stress of basic training, a little humor can go a long way.

Even the RDCs took an interest in them toward the end...

By the way, I'm new to this group and am in the South Bend/Mishawaka area.

S.Sandy, I washed everything in the box except his t-shirt. I cried into and held thatshirt to my face for weeks, until I received the battlestations call.  We understand how you feel.  :)

5timesblessed, Wow what a small world, I can't believe you and your son were at MEPS the same day we were.  I just got the FED-Ex box with my sons things.  I cried when I picked up the box.  Then I went to the mail box and found my son's letter with his address he is in Ship 03 Division 163.  Ready to send the first of many letters tomorrow.  I live on the south side of Indy, around the Southport area.

5times... I also live in Avon!  We had a monthly dinner group which began to "fizzle out" last year, but I was sad to let it die.

I'm happy to meet for dinner with any Indianapolis-area moms!  We had been meeting in Avon, but if downtown is more convenient, that's OK with me.

If you'd like to meet, tell me:

  1. How often - monthly, quarterly, ?
  2. Where - Marion county?  downtown?  Move it around?
  3. Your budget - $10? 15? 20?

I'm glad to organize it and advertise, if I know others will join me.  Thanks! k.

My son's box came Fed-EX, I missed it.  They will try to deliver tomorrow but, I will be at work.  I am going to call to see if they can come at a time when I get home.

Thanks, printing pictures on paper is a good idea.  My youngest son won his first and last game for the season, so I had him to write a letter to his big brother.  I have been keeping in touch with his girl friend, she has had a hard time too.  I am waiting on his address so she and I have been writing letters, they are ready to mail!  I have a calender up so the countdown idea is great.  This will give us something to look forward to.
