Ship 12...
"...not making extra money..." was an opinion put forth by the reporter. The one personal opinion (which came from a fiancee) expressed two sentiments:
1) irritation at the inability to make plans, with which I can sympathize, seeing as I am continuously irked at being unable to know when my sailor might be visited, and
2) irritation at money lost due to unreimbursable expenses which could have been avoided if this decision had been reached a few weeks ago. I think most everyone is irritated at money spent needlessly.
The discussion as to whether the DoD's decision was the correct one is an argument which is not for this page (there are other groups which take on exchanges like that) - but, perhaps we might not respond to one newspaper story by assuming it speaks for 5000 sailors, and then tell those sailors what they should be feeling.
My SR just landed at O'Hare. Happy but so sad at the same time. It is going to be a long 9 Fridays.
Welcome aboard, ConnieA.
You may feel new to the Navy now, but before long, you will be a veteran!
SK2Sailor.....My daughter is about the size you were when she left...LOL....It was funny watching her swearing in....She was the only girl with 8 other guys, she looked like a little kid in the middle of all those boys!
Whenever I find out someone was in the Navy I ask if they would do it again and every single person so far has said absolutely, which is very encouraging!
ConnieA - South Bend here - daughter was the only person (and girl) from Indiana when she left 1/8. Our recruiter drove her to Indy so we did not get to go to MEPS. While at MEPS, she saw her Godmother - couldn't even say a word or wave -
I am from Fort Wayne. This is a great website...so encouraging and filled with so much information. MEPS in Indy tomorrow morning and then 9 Fridays...
Thank you for your encouragement! I'm from Anderson, not far from Noblesville :) I have been writing in anticipation of getting his address.
Hi Navygirlmom! Wow, her birthday is coming up...that must be difficult. I wonder if it's different for a mom whether it's your son or daughter leaving for boot camp. I never really thought about it until now, but I don't know how in the world my mom did it when I left. I was only 18 and weighed 95 pounds... of course I gained 30 pounds in boot camp!! Hang in there! This is SO worth it! If I had it to over again, I would still choose to join the Navy! I learned so many valuable lessons that would not have if I had stayed home. :)
Thank you ALL!! This is such a wonderful place for comfort and encouragement! God bless you all!!
Hi sk2sailor, I already requested you as a friend. My daughter left on Jan 29th and I just got her box yesterday...It's tough! I am on the Southeast side of Indy....I have already been sending my daughter letter this week...I couldnt wait for the letter(typical for me :)) and asked her recruiter for address....Her birthday is this week and I really wanted to get her a card asap to help get her through this tough couple of weeks.
Hello! My son left for boot camp last Wednesday and we just got "the box" today. My husband and I are both Navy veterans. I thought this would make it easier for me knowing what he will be going through, but it actually makes it worse when I think back to my boot camp experience. UGH! I really didn't expect this to be SO hard! Now just waiting for the letter with his address so we can write. Grateful to hear from others who have been or are going through this... thank you!
