I wanted to comment on a post i saw earlier this week about a son or daughter 'dropping the bomb'.  Ask them why they want to join the Navy.  Knowing they have put thought into their decision and are joining for the "right" reason will help you sleep better at night.  I worried every day while my son was at BC - lots of recruits don't make it, but I knew my son went for the right reason - to help him advance in his chosen career path and to make a difference.  One of my proudest moments was seeing my son march in with his division at PIR.

Hi Dakota's mom. My son is at SanAntonio waiting for A school to start. (should start next week)  My son had his own apartment.  He decided what he wanted to keep and what to give away.  It was very overwhelming but he did decide to put stuff in storage.  He kept out a box of clothing and some personal items that is at our house.  our rule was - will i need it in 5 years? does it have sentimental value? can it be replaced?  It was interesting to learn what had sentimental value. My son didn't look pounds but lost inches.  His clothes fit better now.  Once he got to A school, he has asked for some of his things like a book, some civilian clothes (including shoes & belts) and a few pictures.  I have sent magazines, shout wipes or tide pens for those little clean ups on the dress whites, in addition to 3ply TP and cookies.  While in BC - we sent letters every week and embedded pics in the letters.  Loose pics will be shared with other recruits - the chief will see to that. For those sons who think you are going to send their entire room to them - they still have inspections and have to keep things in military order.

Hi Dakota's mom.  My son left May 15.  He to is signed on for 6 years CTI.  He did go through his stuff, but wanted to keep alot of his stuff as well..e-box, computer, clothes..he asked us if we would ship it to him wants he gets to A school.  My son probably won't do sea duty unless he requests it, I don't know if that is the same for your son or not.  I definitely would not throw away the clothes becasue I have learned from the information on N4M's that the food is very good there and many don't lose to much weight.  He lived in a house when he was in college and moved back home about a month before leaving so I was able to talk him in to giving away a lot of household items that would be hard to ship. He donated to his younger sister at IU who just moved into a house for senior year.  Bottomline is I think they are having a hard enough time leaving home and getting rid of all there stuff is a little overwhelming to them.  Home becomes very important to them once they get to BC,and they want any info they can get about family, friends, etc.  Note if you want to send a picture scan it on to your letter because actual pics are reviewed.

What did everyone do with their children's things went they left home? My son is leaving in three weeks for BC and has a six year commitment with IS-ATF. Is it realistic that they want their clothes and such when they get to A school? I can't imagine my son will fit in his clothes after BC. I'm trying to convince him to clean out his (very messy) room but no luck so far. He seems to think I need to send him his entire room when he gets to VA for A school.

Hi.  My son shipped May 15 and is in SHIP 3 Division 218.  I am from Evansville.  Anybody have a PIR date of July 13, 2012.

Mquinn, it is difficult when you are use to having your child so close, then they move.  It seems that my two oldest children made decisions that I knew they would make, but I didn't think it would happen at the same time.  My daughter moved to Louisville KY last Sunday for her new job . . . and now my son will be leaving soon.  Just when I think everything is ok, I start to think about it and start crying.
