Matt's mom Sandy,

Bloomington is actually a tiny bit closer (30min), but they wouldn't give my son the time of day.  So, he went to Greenwood (37min).  No big deal...he could arrange to have lunch with his grandmother in G'wood or meet up with his U-Indy friends. :)  Like I said, the Greenwood guys are great!

Dakota's Mom, what your son wrote on his face book is beautiful.  It brought tears to my eye.  You raised a wonderful son.

Thanks everyone, it's nice to be able to share what I am going through.  This site is great, I know I am not alone in what I am feeling.  I am a mother of four, my oldest daughter went to college in Louisville, KY and graduated college last May.  She moved back to Indy and was lucky enough to find a job.  She just accepted a job offer back in Louisville KY and has moved . . . then my oldest son drops the bomb on me with "Mom, I decided to enlist in the Navy for my fire fighting training"  Just as I got use to having all my children home, two have moved on with their lives.  It is so bittersweet

Matt's mom Sandy,

I was in your shoes a year ago.  My son told me two days before we left on a family vacation (with extended family) that he wasn't returning to college, but was joining the navy.  I kept it to myself (boy, was that hard!!) until we returned.  As soon as we arrived home (I mean within minutes!!), I told my son to tell his dad.

He enlisted two weeks later and was a Greenwood Depper for 9+ mos.  The guys in the Greenwood office prepared him well!

My son graduates bootcamp (PIR) in 3 weeks.  He loves it and is where he is supposed to be right now.  You'll get there.  N4M is a lifesaver.  Like marine navy mom said,  you will find yourself crying any and everywhere with little or no warning.  I think, in this respect, and many others, we moms are all alike.  You are not alone in this journey, at all!!

Be sure to join the "Dep Leaving for Bootcamp in ____" group.  You will learn so much, and you will be meeting other moms whose children are going to RTC with your son.  About a month before he leaves start reading posts at the "bootcamp" group.  There is an N4M group for every phase of this journey.  I don't know how mothers who don't know about N4M do it on their own.  It has to be gut-wrenchingly painful and lonely.  I am so thankful to the veteran moms who have helped me along the way!

How awesome a mom are you to have raised a son who wants to serve his country!  Welcome aboard, navy mom.  Hooyah!

My son posted this on my FaceBook yesterday:

My Grandpa taught me to have a heart, and to always use it.
My Grandma taught me to never lose faith in God, and to learn from him.
My Aunts taught me the meaning of Family, and to hold them close.
My Uncles taught me the skills I need in Life, and how to get a lady!
My Friends taught me humbleness and Kindness, and gave me friendships that will last a Lifetime.
My Teachers taught me wisdom, and set me on the path to Adulthood.
My High School Sweetheart taught me patience, and gave me a friendship like no other.
My Father taught me how to be a Man, and how to be strong in times of hardship.
And my Mama gave me Life, inspired me to Dream, and taught me to have Courage. She held my hand as I grew, and picked me up when I fell. Most importantly, she taught me Love.

It takes a lot to make a man, but no matter what.. it all started with you.
I Love you, Mama.

I am a South-East sider if you ever need someone to talk to.  My son is in year two, and went to BC a year after he graduated. It was a surprise that he enlisted, but it has been the best experience ever for him.

Marine_navy mom,
Thank you for the welcome. I just joined N4M yesterday. I felt all alone in this journey and went online looking for support. I'm so glad I found this group. I'm already starting to feel the pride associated with having a child in the Navy. I'm enjoying every minute with my son. We stayed up until 5 am this morning talking! I think he's starting to realize how much he is going to miss me, too. He told me I was his best friend. Awe! This journey is only going to make us stronger.

Hi Matt's Mom and all. I'm a Marine and Navy mom. AND got little notice when the Sailor enlisted. Was petrified! But it was the best decision ever! and I was bursting with pride at PIR. YOU will be too. With the economy in the shape it's in, it's a great decision for your son. Just know that even in DEP he has to have a stirling record to complete enlistment. No fooling around ever. It's the way of our military now.

Thanks for the words of encouragement Marine Navy Mom and Dakota's Mom.  I can only imagine what the two of you are feeling right now.  I have a few months before is off to RTC, and what time I have with him will be well spent.  There are times I can talk to others about this with out tears and other times . . . well I brust out into tears.
