Oh, how awful for you both! My son's div was always in trouble too and he only got to make one phone call home about 5 weeks in -- and it was twenty minutes of him crying. I stayed strong while we talked, but then I went to pieces when we hung up.

But, he made it through and then got through Nuke power school, and finally got through sub qualification. So, don't view this as a sign of things to come. Bootcamp is just 24x7 pushing on these folks -- a phone call is one of the very few times they can let the tension out. Hugs, k.

Hey we lived by triple X while we were in school:)
The first phone call was rough...i put my dear husband thru trauma before I answered: I have not let my phone leave my side since he left, even been quite obsessed. Anyhow, all the other divisions on his ship callled mon-thurs last week. Our div is ALWAYS in trouble, I assumed that they wouldnt get to call. So, on Sat AM, I was upstairs packing for me and son and left my phone downstairs. :( He tried to call for FIFTEEN minutes before I got to the phone. I felt/still feel TERRIBLE! We got to talk for 15 minutes but he couldnt stop crying... I am pretty sure he thought we weren't going to answer:( He did get to hear his son laugh for him though! Anyhow, I think that I feel WORSE since the call. Hopefully he is better.
I say I only have one responsibilty since he left and that is to answer the phone.. I almost blew it!

Hi, Michelle! That first phone call is wonderful... or perhaps horrible (if your guy was crying and homesick like mine was). Hope you all are coping ok with Dad away. Keep crossing off those days on the calendar! Hugs, k.

Hey All! We are an indiana family as well. We are in Boilermaker country:) My husband is currently in BC and PIR 2/19. We finally just got to talk to him this past weekend.

I love the video of the surprise! Had me in tears!

Jim, get your comfy sneakers on, cuz our next gathering involves some walking. Also, start curling those dumbells while you watch TV, cuz you might be carrying some shopping bags. (:-o Hugs! k.

There are 14 folks attending the Westies dinner tomorrow! (Including a handsome sailor, if you want hugs!) Please respond if you haven't already, so we'll have a chair for you. We chat in the waiting area beginning at 5:30pm and are seated at 6:00. If you're running a little late, it's ok! Wear whatever (just don't come naked). Hugs! k.

Oh, too far away to visit often :-( But, tell your daughter that Daddy's right near the beach and -- if you can visit him there when the weather gets warm -- when you go, then you can spend the day there. Perhaps Dad can send her a (dried) starfish or sand dollar? I know it doesn't make up for having him gone, but could be something to hold on to until you're all together again (plus it'll make for a neat "memory ornament" for the Christmas tree when she's older.

And by the way, congratulations to you and your sailor! I hope you were as thrilled to see your guy walk into that hall as I was to see mine. Did you feel you were going to "bust your buttons?!" Hugs, k.

Oh, Donnita, you have me in tears -- happy ones! To find your sweet boy sitting next to you suddenly, what a HUGE gift! Can there be a better surprise? Can't wait to see ALL of you on Monday... Hugs, k.
