Hubby and I lived in a little OLD Japanese house off base ... the breaker box was only rated at 30 amps. I couldn't run the hair dryer while anything else was on! We did have a tiny microwave, but it was Japanese made. It stayed in Japan when we left.

We had Japanese renter's insurance. The agent came to the house to list our valuables. We had a big American fridge, our kitchen was oddly large enough for it. We got it used for $200. The agent was impressed with the size of it and put it down as the most expensive thing in the house to replace. The Japanese tend to use smaller appliances, buy fresh food near daily, and eat out more frequently. All my previous apartments in Japan had narrow kitchens, almost like a hallway, and fridges so small I could use the tops as counterspace!

Exceedingly smart girl! Akihabara is the electronic district in Tokyo, a lot of fun and a wonderful place to spend tons of money.

Ohm, you had to ask about electricity when an old ET was online, didn't you?

Japan has almost the same voltage as we do, although there are variances in the country. The US runs a standard 120 V and 60 HZ. In Japan, depending where you are, the volts run 100 to 115 volts, which will run most US electronics. In Yokosuka we ran 50 HZ, hubby says Sasebo had 60 hz. This can make a few things with internal clocks run wonky, like alarm clock radios. You don't need voltage adapters, and you can't buy hertz adapters, doesn't work that way. Laptops have internal DC batteries so the AC wall voltage converts everything just fine, auto-adjusting power supplies. Has Japan upgraded since we were there? I sincerely hope so.

Buy electronics in Japan, not in the US beforehand. Laptops from the US will work there, and the NEX sells amazing new electronics at great prices, things we don't even get here in the US.

Welcome mom4sons. Everyone is always worried about their cell phone. I was worried that my son didn't have a credit card yet. I hear that phones and contracts are cheaper in Japan. My son pays $10.00 a month for unlimited local calls.

Your son is young and I understand. But.........it isn't your job to run around and get stuff ready. The navy has this down pat and have been doing it for years. I don't think they have lost one yet. LOL. Orientation is very thorough and there is a place they can go to get advice on this stuff.

Now sit back and enjoy being his mom. Spend that entire week on you and him. Don't forget to drill into him the stuff that is important to YOU. Like, phoning you when he gets there, setting up a way for you to contact him and you will worry yourself sick if you don't hear from him often. Take him on a long car ride and keep saying contact mom, contact mom, contact mom.

Enjoy your 7 days and keep us informed.

Welcome Phyllis. Give us some details. Where in Japan? What is his rate? What ship? Not that we are nosy or anything.

I worked at home today. Did little work. I was feeling exhausted from a trying week and I remembered that TLynn said that I needed a "me" day. So, I followed her orders. I will have to catch up this weekend but it was worth. I did make supper for my hubby and I just heard the garage open.....better go. Talk later.

Weird purple glow? And blue green?
That is a bad storm coming. Blue green -= hail and Purple - severe winds and rain . And too - what you have discribed is a Tornado coming your way. . That is warning signs of one going to hit - here in IL. But with those cold temps - I have no idea. Be watchful and ready to move to shelter. And keep sharing with us - want you save!

Got to get moving - hugs all TLynn
