Jim is bringing the pies. Naturally pumpkin pie and I think there should be a peacan. Any other suggestions? Ang - Sandy is right - your sailor will have the address you need. 5 Hours in WalMart.! After listening to Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy - joke about WalMart - I try not to go there. Anyone heard from Val. I wondering if she has started cleaning her house for all of us coming :) Hawwaii sound great for next year Anti M - are you the tour agent we all need? ANd I have another idea - we all love the Macy's Parade - maybe we should make a float and be in it! Navy Moms and Dad of Japan Sailors Have a good day TLynn

LOL, T-Lynn, that's hilarious!

Debi, you can do it! Just invite a sailor who is EOD for safety! Or is that ETD?

EOD = explosive ordnance disposal

Desserts yes! Last year we flew to WV, and his sisters didn't make one single pie. Nope, they had all sorts of bland low fat low sugar things because all the adults were worried about blood sugar. But they had all sorts of sugary tings for the kids... marshmallows dipped in chocolate, sugar cookies to decorate, crunchy s'mores cereal bars, candy... and you bet the adults who were anti-pie ate all that sugar! A pie of pumpkin pie wold have had fewer calories!!!! As for the day after, the guys went shooting (no room for me) so I was saddled with a trip to Wal-Mart. Five freaking hours in Wal-Mart!!! I HATE Mal-wart!

I'm thinking Hawaii would be a better bet next year.

Wait a minute - the turkey is injected? And they have buttons ? And this lots of foil thing got me in trouble the first time. That's how the turkey exploded in the oven. My sisiter told me to wrap it - so I did. I put the onion and a carrot and piece of celery inside too. And that bag of gravy and a bag with the heart - gizzard - etc. Well I couldn't find them. So I thought they never were placed in , As I said I wrapped up that turkey and baked it. After three hours - there was a big boom - the oven door flew open and shut again. And yes - big black smoke came out. My brave nephew was the one selcted ( shoved ) to open the oven door and check on the turkey. He excitely yelled out - "look at the huge hole in the foil ! " So then we pulled out the turkey - and cut the foil off. My sister then realized I had wrapped the turkey ( extra heavy foil ) and then gave DETAILED information I was to have only place a foil tent over the bird. By this time - everyone thought I had killed dinner, but my nephew decided to check out the bird some more. He stated; " look you can see the breast bone" and reach in to grab it. Which then made the bird split in half and fall to pieces. The bird was done - pressure/steamed cooked. Actually tasty. No carving was needed and we then found the two bags. One of now piping hot gravy and the plastic bag of turkey inners - steamed nicely. So at this point of our conversation - I vote - we all meet up at Vals. Anti M bring the candied yams - Sandy the green bean casserole - Debi a jello mold ( got have a jello) Navy Dad hot rolls and butter - me a fresh tossed salad - or would you all like me to bake the turkey? And Val you have the most important - the wine. Hey someone come forward with dessert. WE all will be there for breakfast and to watch the Macy's parade. And no Christmas music until the day after Thanksgiving. Then we can watch 24 hours of the Christmas Story and eat left overs !!!! Ok - we got a plan. TLynn PS enjoying the sharing and instructions. PSS I really did blow up the turkey - there is no way I could have made that up. And you can ask my sailor !

And I'm really good with candied yams as both hubby and myself are allergic to potatoes.

Turkey is actually easy, you just need a lot of foil, LOL. I don't like the bags personally, but people tend to do what they know.

Thaw the turkey. This takes days in the refrigerator; start early. Avoid turkeys which have been injected with a saline solution (Butterball is really bad for that).

Take out the stuff inside. I don't use it, but some people cook it to go in the gravy. Wash the bird.

Set up your pan and rack. Heat the oven. Place a chopped up onion in the cavity. Oil the bird all over the outside. Wrap the wing tips and leg knuckles with foil. I put sage leaves under the skin, and I do not salt the bird. You can also do butter under the skin. Make a foil tent over the bird and stick it in the preheated oven. Cook according to the directions on the packaging (after you get them back out of the trash, LOL) I like a high temp to crisp, them lower it. A meat thermometer will be your friend even if the bird comes with a button. If you like,you can baste the bird now and then, using pan drippings or olive oil or melted butter.

I never cook a stuffed bird, the stuffing comes out all gooey and takes far, far longer. I do a baked stuffing as a side dish.

Let me get this straight - NOW betweeen us and Japan a 15 hour difference, becasue we set the clocks back - a Japaneese tour guide for the Grand Canyon - hubby goes to Vegas and gets into the bar free and knows all the girls by name, but doesn't play the slots Now I have comtaminated other Moms and Dad with the " Miss my Saior bug". Decorating the home for the holidays ... Ok did I get it all? My son asked what do I talk about on this Navy for Moms - sorry Navy Moms and Dad site. Let you know what he says when I share all this! Ok - it's November - we need to start the ideas for Thanksgiving dinners. Side dishes ? Desserts? How NOT to explode the turkey in the oven? Ok Navy Dad you are up first. TLynn
