Wendy Hope you get to sit with your son. My sailor's was meet by two sponsors. The Petty Officer and a salor with the same rank as him. OH! Ask him to call his sponsor and see if he can travel in civilain clothing. My son was told to be in dress whites from Officers at Ingelside. When he arrived in Japan - The Petty Officer's first words ; "Why are you wearing those? - You are a target ! " And plaese let us know he arrives safely. TLynn

Some sponsors go to the airport, others can't get the time off from work.

Yes - Skype! Wendy, please check with the airlines that your son is flying and see if they will allow you to go to the gate and be withhim as he waits. We found out to late and my son waited another 2 hours before his flight. We could have had breakfast together. Hope you can :). Good luck TLynn

Anita, I haven't heard of majic jack. Skype is free. What does majic jack have to offer. I used skype when I was in Japan and paid the extra $3.00 a month to phone any landline in the U.S. or Canada. ($10.00/month for international). There are many discussions on Skype in this forum, but it is free Skype to Skype, and if you have webcam you can see each other.
I have a question: If I phone my sons cell phone number, will he be charged?

I haven't tried charcoal. I've heard road salt too, but I don't know if you can get that or not. The chemical ones are nice because they do suck up a ton of moisture and it is easy to pour out.

We also kept pipe tobacco in our bins to keep the clothes smelling fresh and the bugs away.

Bugs, now there's a topic.

Hey, I survived Japan... I know, unhelpful.

Kathy, no, not the electric ones, these are ones that have a gel or crystals, those suck up the water and it drains into a catch bowl. Makes sense once you've seen one, I will try to find a picture. I had an electric one with a shut-off switch, it worked too well and the switch did not. Oops, wet floor.
