Almost every Navy command is very liberal with liberty during holiday periods. Even when we had to work, they'd cut us loose early during the day and give us days off. They have to be careful not to give more than 72~96 hours straight, but my one command pushed the limits. Single sailors often volunteer to stand duty to let the married guys spend time with their kids and wives. Most commands do have parties and folks get together. We even had Christmas gift opening breakfasts on Diego Garcia where there are no families allowed. We made our own family! Of course there always have to be a certain amount of people to keep things running so there is work to be done.

Christmas in Japan? They celebrate the commercial aspect of it and have parties and give gifts. I miss Christmas cake with my neighbors. New Years is a huge holiday there, and that's when things would close. New Years is a religious holiday and the shrines are packed, but there is also a huge amount of partying going on. Don't think of trying to do or see anything New Years Day, everything shuts down.

Yokosuka is cold during the winter, not snowy cold, just that humid cold that gets into your bones. This is when Sasebo or Okinawa are preferable!

This is my son's first duty station and I was wondering about Christmas. Are the ships in, do the sailors get off for Christmas, do any of them get to come stateside, and is it possible to visit them then?

A word about Navy Lodges overseas. They're great, but they are also the primary place for Navy families to stay as they PCS in and out of country. This means the lodge gets very, very crowded, especially in summer when families move most often. Be certain ti find out the reservation window, and stay on top of making the reservation as soon as possible.

Sometimes that's the only place for families PCSing to stay. I know they used to bump folks without PCS orders, and there were waiting lists. I have heard, but can't verify, that things are much better now.

CCR, you were able to get a reservation in Coronado? Way to go! That's another one that's often fully booked.

Wow, I didn't think you could beat the $27.00 a night room at Gateway Navy on Coronado Island (san Diego) That is good to know -since my son joined the Navy, I'm gonna be the one that gets to see the world since I can't go that long without seeing him!

HI EVERYON E !!!!!
Yes I am excited. Please visit my page and view the comment area. Another MN Mom's son - who is on the same ship as mine and the sip's photographer - sent me a picture of my son ! Please visit and meet my son :). Things have been alitlle hairy here. Mom is having health issues agian. Dealing with it - just didn't want to complain. But I always come here to read and feel safe. Even with earthquakes updates. Oh forgot - Navy Dad doesn't want us Navy Moms to talk about bad events becasue somehow - we make them happen. Ok we all will start talking about good things: hugging our sailors soon - winning the lottery - etc. ( are you smiling Navy Dad? ) And yes, the caterpillars finally formed into the last stage of growth. There are 19 Monarch crysalis' and one caterpillar still eating. Anyway - please visit my page and meet my son :). Have a wonderful evening TLynn

I'll put a thing about trains in teh Not All Raw Fish Discussion

Kyoto is the ancient capital, and yes, it is amazing. Not close to Yokosuka, you must ride the bullet train to get there. If you can, stay in a Japanese inn, called a ryokan. Dad wouldn't go to the Peace Memorial. He never would, being a WWII vet, it upset him. We stayed on Miyajima, a small island with shrines and resorts and a very famous torii gate, the huge one in the water.

another place I loved to visit from Tokyo or to go for a weekend was Nikko. It is up in the mountains and is just gorgeous. Very ornate shrines, and the original carving of the famous three monkeys, Hear no Evil, See no evil, Speak no evil.

Kamakura is another ancient capital and a 20 minute train ride from Yokosuka. The Dhaibutsu (Great Buddha) is there. Many, many shrines, I used to go rambling there as often as I could. The Hase Kannon shrine is dedicated to lost pregnancies and babies, very moving, but emotionally rough. Important to me personally is why I mention it.

Hi Val, we just got back from Yokosuka. We stayed in Tokyo because my husband had business there. We took the train to Yokosuka. It was really easy, clean and only about an hour by train. I don't know about the Navy Lodge but I know you will have a blast in Yokosuka. The base is really big and you have to take "base taxis" to get from one end to the other. They have a great Chili's on base. It has a great view of the ocean (or bay) and the NEX is really big there. There are two malls in Yokosuka, too. I Hopefully, you will see other areas in Japan, too? I would suggest taking the bullet train to Kayoto (I think I misspelled it). It was so beautiful and has many of the historical temples there. You will have to see the Ginza in Tokyo (shopping) and if you have time go to the Peace Musuem in Hiroshima.
