The Japanese use the "shindo" scale, not the Richter scale. Ricther goes 1~8, Shindo 1~10. So we could all be correct at the same time, just using different measuring systems. Sasebo is too far away to feel an earthquake centered near Tokyo. The cities are even on different islands.

I have a personal ghost story from the old boot camp in Orlando, but I tend not to share it. The Navy is full of ghost stories.

Note: have them carry a piece of Hemitite. It protects against negativity. When the stone cracks - give it back to Mother Earth and get a new one :) TLynn

Well, this has been interesting reading. I too have not heard anything from my sailor, but being in Sasebo - maybe he felt nothing. If he didn't - he will be out of sorts again because he missed it. So Navy Dad - what topics do you wish us All Powerful Moms to talk about? Beisdes hamburgers. Summit list and we will take the suggestions into consideration. :) Anit M, I will be waiting to find out your research if the scale for messurement of earthquakes are different. But I thought recorded information of quakes - typhoons and other extreme weather; are the same and accepted by all scientist for complete data research and comparison. Not only that , but for tracking purposes. I remember a series on the History channel about quakes and volcanic eruptions are recorded and then possible predictions of where another one might accour from all this collected data. Am I remembering correctly? If this is so - would not all messurements of danageous weather be the same in every country? share soon all TLynn PS More ghost stories please

Well, I think the Japanese use a different system and when the news agencies pick it up, it doesn't turn out right? I can check that out, do a little research. I think I remember something like that. Fleet and Family Services should have an earthquake preparedness handout, I know we had to go through training on it.

Anit M. I got the number from msn news. I wonder why there is such a huge difference?
CNN says it reached 7.1, 200 miles ssw of Tokyo. Tokyo itself must have been 4.3 and the epicenter out in the ocean. (I'm guessing).
Comment by Anti M on August 9, 2009 at 10:19am
The latest quake in Tokyo was a 4.3, not a 6.9. A six-nine would have taken down buildings. A four-three isn't bad at all. Stuff falls off shelves. If your kids have TVs or such, they should learn how to secure them from falling.

I use this site to track quakes:

Earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 shakes Tokyo and surrounding areas at 7:56 p.m today. That's less than two hours ago. There where no reports of casualties or injuries. I pray that everyone is ok.
I loved reading all the stories below. Give Kyle a hug for all of us Julie. When is he due home?
