Thank you Anti M. I hope Julie reads all this information. My son is on the same ship and I can tell you that they are as far away as they could possibly be. I would like to hear other peoples experiences in this matter. As sad as it is, my dad is 85 and my son is very close. I would like to plan ahead.
It is my understanding that the air force supply run to Japan, takes them to San Diego and they will have to fly home from there.

As for sailors going home for funerals from overseas, if it is emergency leave and they are on shore duty or in port, I believe they fly home Space A with priority seating, free. I'd have to look it up and it may vary by command.

While deployed? That's complicated. They can't always fly/chopper a sailor off the ship, it may be too far out, and it won't hit a port just for one sailor. Might need a passport if it isn't a SOFA port. I actually don't know for sure, but I have a gut feeling that it doesn't happen easily.

Thank you Anit M.
Knowing is comforting. Wish we could hug Julie personally and hope her son is receiving hugs from his shipmates. A Solar Eclipse is coming on Wednesday - make a wish for something new or of a need. :) TLynn

T-Lynn, if the death is not an immediate family member, it is likely the sailor cannot take leave. Grandparents, unless they raised the child, aren't classified as immediate family members. Generally, parents, siblings, spouses and children, in-laws (?) and no others. I would have to look that up, there's links on about.com.

The Navy does not pay to send the sailor home in the States. My brother died in December, my nephew was on a flight shortly after from Goose Creek. He borrowed the money for air fare from Navy Relief (or whatever it is called these days) and is paying it back over ten months. He was home for only three days; school began Monday and he was back in class on Tuesday, catching up. No, the Navy does not give you much time if you have a job to do or a school to attend.

Anti M,
If a ship is out to sea and there is death in a sailor's family. Will, the Navy always allow the sailor leave to get home? Does the Navy help the sailor with airfare/ any type of travel means to get home? How much time is a sailor allowed to be home for something like this? Please share your knowledge. This leads me into more sharing about the meet and greet in Rockford, last Saturday on the 18th. I left out a couple of discussion points. One very important - Melia was there! ( I know - how could I forget ? - extra long deep enbedded gray roots! ) But during our talks - she got us to talk about ourselves. She was so sweet to help reminds us Moms - that we count too. Lets face it - us Moms and Dad - and Wives - get tunnel vision - our sailors. ANd will forget about ourselves. Melia sharing about herself - gave all of us a great time to brag about us! ANd she also, helped answered questions dealing with Navy life - orders - and websites to visit. That made me wish you were there Anti M. By the way if your ears were burning - I was talking about you and the other Moms mentioned that they had seen your site too. The other points I forgot - do not give Dianne the map because she pays to much attention to everyone gossiping in the car and then cannot read the map right and misses the exits on the highway. That we NEED a box of kleenex on table becasue someone will start a tearful story and then everyone just has to have a cry. And that some Moms' sailors have their smiles - so that makes them lucky to see that smile every morning . I guess I just took the entire page gabbing here. But I still think a 101 Navy 4 Moms/Dad class - lead by Melia and Anti M would be awesome. And just think of all the fun we would have meeting up! Just an idea . Have a good evening. And Navy Dad - you just want to see if I do look like Ducky. You will be surprised - I do! TLynn

Kim, the best and fastest way to make contact in Julie's case is the Red Cross. I know there's a thread specifically devoted to this in General Discussion. The ombudsman may be able to make contact, but the Red Cross is the official way to also let the COC know there is a death in the family.

The site is called: Illinois N4M. Go to my page - go to the group section - I have only 3 - click the icon of the Illinois State Flag. Hopefully, you can bring it up. Jeannie did a very nice job of taking pictures too. Have to share - my sailor just called about 10 minutes ago. He said it is so windy and the ship in on work detailed of 14 to 16 hour days. Another inspection is coming. This is the third one he has mentioned. The wind was blowing so, I could not make out what inspection this is. But I heard his voice. Hope everyone hears from their sailors. . take care TLynn

Julie, I sent my condolences on the Essex site, but I wanted to address this here. Anti M, is there a person on the ship that Julie can contact. I thought she could contact the Ombudsman. They are currently deployed far away from Japan. I remember they told us to contact the red cross for family emergencies when they where in boot camp.
