T-Lynn. Tell your mother that American Chinese food is not the same as real Chinese food. It is more difficult to eat with chopsticks. Tell her to cut her meat in one inch pieces and practice. Then get her some sushi! LOL

If you look on my page, I think I have a couple Fuji hike photos in my album. I'd have more, but they're all old photos I have to scan in after digging them out of the albums.

Good Evening everyone!
Oh - what a night here! It is like Autumn, no kidding. Cool - fresh air - every window open and Grandmother Moon is glowing. This site has been busy. So glad to get some gossip from you Mark. And go ahead and eat those shrimp crackers - they re good. Carol I hope you will be sharing the special moment on Mt. Fuji. I beleive all of us would like to honor your son. Staci - you HAVE to let us know what is in the care package that your youngest is sending. I am wanting to make a package with CHicago Cub items. And one with nothing but Halloween items. That is a big holiday in this house. Sharing - the last two packages arrived today. One has his computer to get fixed adn the other with gifts. Gram received a set of 6 golden silk placemats with matching napkins and matching chopstick holders with the chopsticks. Now Mom wants to order Chinese - she doesn't like Chinese, but wants to try the chopsticks. I recieved a Christmas ornament - a Sea Horse in gold. And Guess what - he sent the pet turtle (Shark) a carved turtle compass. Shark is looking it over. Let you know if she likes it later. Hey Navy Beane's Mom - just tell Josh that you have mentioned to the Navy Mom's site that he is NOT sending gifts. And that now other moms are telling their sailors - who are on the same ship to bug him. Let us know how soon a package arrives :) Julie, I wasn't on this site eithor when my son left for Japan. I know how you feel, but we can be a big help to others and now we know where to go for help and just plain fun gossip. Anit M - promsie never to leave us. Everyone a great night of sleep and dreams. Carol, I'm sure he can do that, but yes, best to ask.

Sponsors are pretty automatic, but I do know some of the big ships have a request form on their site. When in doubt, ask. The orders will always have phone numbers on them.

You ladies would have loved me as your sailor daughter. I sent packages home all the time, to my parents, to nieces and nephews, to my brothers. The old Fleet Exchange had a packaging center and a post office, so you could buy gifts, have them boxed up and sent all in one trip. I sent woodblock prints, fans, kimonos and yukata, chopsticks, fun things from the stationary stores, washi paper, dishes, snacks, weird toys... I loved giving gifts. 12 years gave me plenty of opportunity.

Scrapbookers, ask you sailor to find washi paper for you. Amazing and beautiful hand-made papers in all price ranges.

Carol, I am so sorry for your loss. Mt. Fuji is a powerful place, and taking the urn to the summit would be a wonderful, symbolic act. If I may ask, do you plan on leaving the urn there? He should ask the base chaplain to find out for sure if that would be allowed.

I know I have left a tiny memorial in the caves at the Hase Kannon shrine in Kamakura for the children I lost (ectopic pregnancies) and I felt quite good about leaving them in the care of a goddess of peace at a Shinto Shrine, even though that's is not my religion. Whatever makes you most comfortable and brings you peace is the right thing to do.

My son just took off for Yokosuka. I'm sad but happy for him. I can't wait to hear from him when he gets to Japan.

Carol,
I know all of our Navy Moms' and Dad's hearts are sending you a hug now. So glad that your son's wish will be fulfilled. I hope the moment that this event happens will be speical. Take care T-Lynn PS Anit M - keep educating and sharing with us!

Japan can get downright chilly in Yokosuka, Atsugi and most especially Misawa, which is way up north. Sasebo, not so much, and Iwakuni is warm and tropical. Standing watch exposed to the weather means long johns would be handy. And our Japanese house was heated only with kerosene heaters, so we wore many layers of clothes.

Narita isn't really that big, not compared to Atlanta or Detroit or Charles De Gaulle. It is very confusing though!

I've been up Mt. Fuji. The MWR organizes good tours, and sometimes a command will organize their own outing. The climbing season is quite short, in between typhoon season and winter.

T-Lynn, what a great son for sending these gifts. Having all boys, I loved the one he sent to his brother. The D-O-D is an acronym for Department of Defense. I work for a company that does contract work. I went to Japan once, but several of my colleagues have gone several times. My husband works for the same company and went to Yokosuka. BTW, we call it Yoko. I went to Yokota (its and air force base even though my work was with the navy). There are no sponsors for contractors. After getting lost in Narita airport for over an hour, I finally figured out the buzz word that Japanese knew. "D-O-D". I ran around the airport asking all information booths. "Yokota base" "united states" "US navy" and about 20 other phrases. When I hit on DOD, they understood.

Hi
Robin let us all know when you hear again from your sailor. But so far sounds like he did just fine. Anit M - again thanks for sharing more inforamtion. By the way you mentioned that the NEXs run out of long johns early - should that be standard part of their windter uniforms? My sailor said it gets COLD there. Please - re define D-O-D? My oldest son received his pass port and now making plans to be with his brother over the New Year's holiday. Oh, my husband opend his bday present - a hand carved flute in the shape of a Dragon. Must be from Bali. My sailor said - two more pacakges on the way. WE have the windows open here tonight. The hot weather has past and the air is so fresh and clean. Everyone a pleasen night. And please keep us posted on your sailors. T-Lynn
