Hi, just heard that my son will be on a destroyer out of Yokosuka. Can you ladies get me up to speed on what I need to know?

Robyn, tell you son to check out the USO for phone calls also. You should go to the post office and pick up Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes and customs papers. I keep a supply here and send a box every month. It costs around $10.00 no matter what you put in there. They come in small, medium and large. There is a millitary discount on the large only. Therefore, the large is a few cents more than the small. Your son will give you a U.S. address when he is over there but you will still need to fill out customs forms. The best part is they deliver the boxes anywhere in the world that their ship is. They come with their supplies.

Verbal orders... a good beginning!

For retired personal, you must wait until 30 before your arrival. Same for active duty (if your son was to reserve the rooms for you) unless he was on orders, then he had 90 days before arrival to make reservations.

I might suggest calling Navy Lodge too instead of booking on-line. When I checked with my dates on-line, they were saying all rooms were booked, but when I called the reservation center, they had rooms available. It has happened before so I knew to double check. Availability also depends on the transfer season and tourist season.

I'll be heading to Yokosuka in less than two weeks. I paid for my ticket at the first of the year and it was $1500.00 but have been told that they are going for about $800.00 right now. As I am also retired military, I had to wait to reserve a room at the navy lodge.

Patricia, Misawa is a small base in Northern Japan. There's interesting things to do up there, but far less "happening" away from busy cities like Yokohama and Tokyo. I've been told that long underwear is desirable, although I never visited there myself.

Good Mroning to all.
Been reading and this site always helps my day to be better. So glad too, to know you have heard from your sailors. This IS the place to get answers and we are lucky in another way - we got a Navy Dad - so we can get the other side point of view. Anti M - sorry that I did not get back to you, I took my computer to the Geek Sqaud and they said there is nothing I can do to darken this print. They said it is becasue I use comcast. So I will just have to re-read to make sure I get things right. But thanks for being there. Sharing - got a wonderful LONG phone call from my son! He has a cold, but he said he is better than some of the other shipmates. Now the ship caught the flu and pink eye. I can understand getting the flu - but not pink eye. With ths shp having the Chicken Pos and now these illiness, I almost feel he is back in elementary school. And just like in grade school class rooms - when one gets sick - it would. travels through the entire class. And can anyone explain - WHY? If they take the sea sick pills - they GET sea sick. This is confusing, I thought the sea sick pills are suppose to NOT let one be sea sick. I am beginning to think that Navy Medcine is like Navy Time - both equal in meaning of MAYBE ! Back to my sailor - he talked with his Gram and a LONG time with his dad. And even the pet turtle. Yes, the turtle responded to his voice, she was knodding her head. This means she knows and accepts you. Then we placed her by his picture and she cept knodding. The turtle is 24 years old this August and she has us all well trained. Espcially her sailor. Well, I gossiped enough. Have to go bake a pineapple upside down cake. Every one - have a wonderful day. Hugs T-Lynn

T-Lynn, I'd have to know what operating system and type of computer you were using and I possibly could tell you how to make the print on screen larger... I have to do that.
Comment by T-Lynn on May 24, 2009 at 9:15pm
PS ; Is there a way I can make the print darker in color - to see better? Maybe then I will not make so many mistakes.

Hi - it's me again.
I made a big mistake and apoligize to all. I was so forcused on the name of the soldier killed, that I read the name of city wrong. It's Belleville, IL not Belividere, IL. The soldier's name is still so familiar to me. My family is from the southern region and even my mother mentioned he sounded familiar. I hope his route home is filled with people showing the greatest of respect . Again I apoligize to all. I cannot be there in person - but I will light a candle to honor him. T-Lynn
