Good Morning Everyone, WOW Navy Moms are strong! Wish I had joined up with all of you earlier. Joan, I have been reading about your son. And I hope by now he is getting the information and results to help him. At first I thought he was on a commercial flight. My son was - when he left for Japan. And it was understood ir he/military personal are on DUTY - they could not be bumped. SO if he was on a commerical flight - I would get on your local radio station talk shows and TELL what happened and named the airline. Please let all of know that your son arrives to his station. Take care Terry

Hi veryone, And welcome Tami. Does anyone have a definition of what cranking is? I thought it was kitchen duty, but I am getting the idea I am wrong. I mentioned to Claudia - that the Navy needs to have a Dictionary for us Moms. Or we all should just write a book. The book could have many chapters:
1. Defintions of Navy Terms.2. What the Navy WILL pay or not pay. 3. What items to take for over seas duties ( As Moms we know what we have had to send over because they needed it. Like my son needed long johns to be warm. The PX didn't have his size!) 4. PHONE service 5. Dealing with Boot Camp, A School, Missing our kids - ETC. I know you all will have ideas to add. Then we could have a fun chapter of the silly things our kids tell us. Naturally, we would not use their names We could write a book and then MAKE the Recruiters hand them out. One for the new sailors and one for new Navy Moms.
Sorry, frustrated again. ALex called his brother very late. Alex was just so home sick that he forgot the time difference. Ales should be out to sea again tomorrow - I think. Well, everyone have a good weekend. Need to go - pies are baking. Take Care Terry

Hi, Yes, Alex mentioned he had to do "crank duty" too. But my son was in a cranky mood too - as we talked. So I guess he is doing double duty. His ship was to stop at Yokosuka, but then the ship returned to it's own base at Sosabo. (USS Patriot) It is to leave out soon again - can't temember to what port in Japan - then out to Korea. But he stated in was actually looking forward to work in the kitchen. He shared that it will be nice and warm and he can snack on all the foods he will be helping the cooks with. That will make him happy - a full tummy! Question - is this crank duty 3 or 4 months long? Have a good day everyone. I am out to shovel snow. We have at least 4 inches now and by 3 PM a possible 6 to 8 inches. It will melt by Monday - but I still have to have the driveway clear for our cars to be for the city snow plows to plow freely. I do not want to unbury a car again! . Terry

Dear All, I need to say I am sorry to Carol, about mouthing off. I am protective of my sons. And at times my mouth will speak without my brian. Carol I am sorry. I did not mean to be disrespectfull to you or to your husband. I just want to see a break for our kids in the military. Please forgive me. Terry

Hi - At the Chicago Airprot there was a sing that stated - no charge for military bags! Call your congress rep. and let them know. Sometimes it does help. But I have alsodone this: I have called on the local radio talk shows - the days that you can talk about anything. Then give teh name of the airline - what they did because they KNEW that any military person doesn't have any imediate help at that moment. It is like robbery when the airlines does that. AS my sons have told their friends: " My mom can be a real b----- at times, but she there for us."
It's ok for us Moms to take a stands for our kids. Try giving the airline a "truth" wake up call on the radio show. Good luck

Hi Everyone, I have finally been able to get back to the site and my son too - had problems with Sprint. Before leaving Ingelside, Texas ( A School) he had to purchase a new phone - a BlackBerry. He was told he would be able to call from anywhere and they set up International calling rates on his contract with them. Luckily, when he got back to Rockford, Illinois - some one told him that his phone would NOT work in Japna. He immeidiately got on the phone to Sprint. Luckily too, Alex had cept his receipts and the a copy of that contract with international rates. SPrint was nice - let's face it - they were caught red handed! Alex was told by a Sprint manager - that the sales persons are NOT to sell international rates. Alex was able to prove that this had happened - so Sprint did cancel his contract with no fees - and gave him free phone calls until he left for Japan. Now we have this BlackBerry phone - sitting. Alex only used it for 4 weeks. He now has that SkyVee or SkyPe and he purchased prepaid phone cards. He said he can get a card with 300 minutes for $20.00. He purchases them on base. He is at Sasebo, Japan. By the way, Alex set it up for us to have Power of Attorney to be able to help him - if there are any problem with cridet cards or driver license, etc. The Navy helps to set that up, Now, I am waiting to hear from him - he is on his ship (USS Patriot). Be out for a month. I email him every other day. And I am working on two more packages to send his way. It was so nice to read in the many emails from all of you - what you send you kids. My Alex loves National Geographic, History, comics, DVDs - snack foods. And I agree - wend personal speical items that only your kids will understand. That is the best love and sure makes creating a package speical. Last Saturday night - (before the ship left for duty) Alex called and just didn;t want to hang up. He was trying to talk about anything - everything just to keep the on the phone. After nearly 3 hours, I asked him if he was ok. Just missing us. So I told him I would stay on all night for him if he needed me. That made a difference. So I am planning on sending a Battle Ship game. Then one night - we will play Battle Ship together. I am trying to think of other games too. I know this sounds silly - but we played board games at home. So I am sharing this idea with all of you. And thanks for listening. Alex has been in Japan since October 3rd of 2008 - But sometimes it feels like he has been gone longer. Take care everyone Terry

Dear Kathleen and Susan, So happy to know that you two have sons on the same ship. My son called last night and he was neeeding to talk too. He just didn't want to say goodby. His ship - the USS Patriot is getting ready to leave for duty. But I shared with him that I was now connected with N4Ms and he thought that was great. Please let you sons know you two have made contact. It could be a real start of a good friendship for them and a comfort that they have Moms - who are getting to be friends too. But mostly care about them! So happy for you. Have good day!

Cecelia - Glad you were able to communicate by computer. Let's face it - we spoil our kids, becasue we love them so much and they are good kids and deserve being spoiled. I guess I say that, because I miss Alex. You have a good day. Terry PS when I get down - I go and hug the small TY Panda bear Alex left. It helps.

Greetings! Happy Valentine's Day too. Last evening I sent out a message of hope that everyone would hear from their children in Japan. And I did receive my hug over the phone from my son - Alex, He talked my ear off. Anything and everything he could think of. It was heartwarming. So I am so hoping all of you have recieved the same. Alex was sharing that his ship - USS Patriot will be leaving soon for two ports in Japan and then off to Korea. (Hopefully, I will remember to have a pad and pen handy next time he calls - so I will jot down the names of the ports and check it out on a map - EXACTLY - where is going. I reminded him to please send post cards to his Grammie.) Then he stated he had sent packages home and be on the look out for them. He also mentioned he was wanting a care package. A package of snack foods: food bars - the CHEWY kind, Gold Fish, Wheat Thins, dried fruits, etc. Oh and a letter if it will fit in the box. ( By the way - I CAN pack a box very well now. Have any of you been noticing how us Navy Moms can get so much stuff in those boxes from the Poat Office?) Alex asked for these food tiems, becasue he stated: "Mom, when you see your own cooks of the ship - standing in the back of the kitchen - eating McDonalds and not the stuff they cook - you know to eat something else! And it's not that the guys are bad cooks - it is the foods that is giving to them that just does not go together". Have any of you heard about ship food from your children? Do you send food tiems and what else could I send? Need to rush off - I have to bath teh pet turtle and shovel snow. For Valentine's Day we received about 2 inches of snow in Rockford, Illinois. Luckily , it appears to be melting - IF you shovel down to the cement. And I have company coming too - so I have to bake a PineApple Upside Down Cake - my mother's recipe. Everyone - thanks for listening. Have a wonderful day. Terry
