uoflgrad68, welcome to our group!  You are doing the best thing to join these Navy Moms groups because they will help you through these next weeks while your son goes to boot camp.  Dolphin gave a lot of great advice, especially that you need to joing the boot camp group.  I still go back to that group to pay it forward and offer help because I know how much it helped be get through those weeks when my son was at boot camp.

As far as what your son can do to prepare to leave for boot camp, he's really already gotten himself ready just by making the decision to join the Navy.  If he's dedicated to serving his country, then boot camp is just his first step toward that goal and he'll be ready to do whatever it takes to make it.

Asking all your family members to send letters is very helpful and will keep the support going for your son.

Your son will try to tell you that you don't need to be there for his swearing in, but you be sure to do everything you can to be there.  Take lots of pictures cause he'll really be glad you were there.  We have been there for every time our son has graduated or finished different trainings or schools and we'll continue to be there if at all possible.  Now my son and his wife are expecting their first child on June 6th and I will be heading to Norfolk in June to be there to see my first grandchild!  We just got to spend a week after Christmas in Norfolk with my son and his wife.  We even got to go on his ship to eat Christmas dinner with him on Christmas Day because he had duty.  Awesome!

We're here for you in this group, so be sure to keep in touch.

Hi moms et al!

Sorry to be away so long but the black friday to new years period can be really hectic in our world--like it isnt in anyone's world! But, with a husband in one state running a retail establishment and the school semester ending in Dec for me, writing, giving and assessing finals and doing grades on top of christmas and everything else can really run one ragged! As we all know.

I got to spend Thanksgiving here in KY with my Binker and flew my Katie home to spend the holidays with our family. With my sister in from Boston and Alex home, I at least got Kate. My husband is so busy with getting the store ready that its better for her to miss a few days of school and be with me than alone up there with him.

Bink finished A school in early Nov and was on hold until this week so he was able to get 7 days at Christmas too and went to NY and we did the family stuff up there. Thank godness Kmart isnt open on Christmas day or I'm sure that would have been a work day too. But, Bink flew back to Charleston on Christmas after having to drive all over western NY to get him on a plane (his was overbooked) and he fortunately only had to spend 8 hours or so in Chicago instead of 2 days or so in Dulles!

So, now, Binker is in love. The first girl he ever liked, went out with, dated, etc. She is in his class so he cannot be officially dating but they seem ga ga over each other. He finally found a female version of himself. They spent his birthday weekend (last weekend) going bike riding in the hills somewhere outside of Charleston. I always thought I would be jealous but its nice knowing he has someone looking after him. He has been eating like a vegetarian since they started in on this relationship and he is happy and content (other than having to "sneak" around). She kind of reminds me of myself at that age, although I dont know much about her other than her facebook page. They debated over Christmas about what produces the most oxygen: rainforests or algae. What geeks!

I am in Louisville if anyone needs me to talk to--noticed that request.

My house in NY, where the rest of my kids and husband live, in on the way to Ballaston spa, dolphin, if you need a stopover spot and want to tour wine country. Bink and Jones both are going to request it for prototype.

NO MORE SNOWDAYS! I'll never get to NY in time for Katie's birthday at this rate! We've had more snow here than Elmira has had in NY. Ah well, one more day in June, one more day til grades are due here.

We are new to this. Our son is leaving for boot camp on January 18th. We live in Louisville. Any recommendations for helping him mentally prepare for leaving?

Hey everyone my sailor is here and leaving on Jan 14th driving back to WA.  I am a little nervous about that.  What a nice surprise babrams7.  Hope everyone is doing fine.  I am certainly ready for spring!

Dolphin and all other Ky Navy Moms,

I will be glad to take over the helm and help get our January outing planned because I really want us to continue our get togethers.

Since Shakertown only has their winter kitchen open now, let's put that off until the fall when it's a much better experience there in their main dining hall, plus it's beautiful there in the fall.

Here are some ideas I have for us to get together for either lunch or dinner in January:

  • Midway's main street has some unique restaurants like Darlin Jean's Apple Cobble Cafe', a bistro and several others
  • In Louisville or Smithfield, there's a great place called "Our Best"
  • Here in Lawrenceburg, we have a great bbq place called "Tony's BBQ Barn"
  • Frankfort has a couple great tea rooms with great food
  • In Glendale, there's a famous place called Whistle Stop

How does lunch or dinner on Jan. 22nd at one of the above places sound for any of you?

Just an FYI my son surprised us and came home on Jan. 5th. and is leaving tomorrow, Jan. 8th. We are having a wonderful time plus he has been able to visit a lot of his friends this time around.

Shiela - The pics are great, it's hard to believe a friend took them and not the professional.

Dolphin - Moving to Feb. or March is fine with me.

Dolphin and others - It is fine with me if you want to share my story with others.  We are back home in Ky now and my heart is so full of all the wonderful memories of the week we got to spend in Norfolk with our son and his wife.  When I hugged him yesterday morning as he left for duty, I told him that the next time we get to see him in June, he'll be a daddy!  What a great new year this is going to be for us with a new grandbaby to be born June 6th! My son and daughter in law are so excited to be expecting and they go on Jan. 12th for the ultrasound to find out the sex of the baby.  Anticipation is rising!

Hope everyone has a blessed and happy new year!
