My son is leaving for bootcamp on Aug 20, 2015 although is trying really hard for an earlier ship date.

He is almost 25 and in a real hurry to get on with the next stage in his life.

It feels like it is right around the corner.  My son would leave early too, but I'm hoping that doesn't happen.  He doesn't graduate until then end of May.  He leaves August 3, and he will be in his cousin's wedding.

Hi Terry's Mom - my son will leave 8/18/15 and is 21. He feels the same way your son does...ready to go!!

Maybe they will meet each other there.  What is his rate?

YN....which I was surprised he chose. Later on I found out the reason was, the other ratings would not let him leave before December for BC. As I said before Ready to Go!

Oh my goodness.  My son is a YN as well.  I guess it makes sense that they would be going to bootcamp at about the same time because there must be a A school class starting up close to when they graduate boot.  So they will be in Meridian together for sure.  My son chose YN kind of by default.  He was trying to go nuke, but he is partially color deficient.  Then they wanted him to be a CTN, but his wife & her family are all naturalized citizens from Israel so they declined to process him for Top Secret clearance.  I admit at first he was a little disappointed not to get his original choices, but after more research he is really excited about YN. 3 months from today he ships to bootcamp.  Can't come soon enough for him.

As my son's shipping date nears I have been reading this page a LOT more. I have a question - maybe for the admins, but someone else may know.  Is it somewhat unusual to ship out to bootcamp on a Thursday?  I've looked through all of the August 2015 posts and I found one person who was recently changed to an Aug 13 date, no one else on Aug 6, 20 or 27. Since I see lots of Mon, Tues, Wed dates I was just curious.  Also is it a lot more likely to take 10 Fridays till PIR?  And would it affect his likelihood of being placed in a 900 div? He is ambivalent about that.  Some folks on Navydep.com said it is just extra work but a few have said the extra stuff you do is at least interesting.  He would stand a chance of being placed in the Triple Threat div for 10/16 PIR because he was a music major in college at one time (tuba) and he has a really high ASVAB score. I have heard the ASVAB score might matter for the 10/16 ship staff div.  but I don;t really know...

I understand that div 900 is the performance div (?), but how is that div selected?  Can you tell me what a Triple Threat div is ?  Sometimes I realized how little I actually know.

There are actually They are "staffed" on a rotating basis. Here is the link that describes how they work.  http://navyformoms.com/group/bootcampmoms/page/900-divisions.

I figured out that depending on which PIR date he gets he would either get Triple threat (music) or Staff (bodycatchers, etc).  If he got put in triple threat he would graduate a week earlier.  Since he is a Thursday arrival it is iffy whether he would be there 8 or 9 Fridays.

Bodycatcher? That sounds ominous.

I thought so too the first time I saw the term :).  Since they are standing so long at PIR some new sailors forget & lock their knees which can cause them to pass out.  The bodycatchers are supposed to be watching for signs of this & get to them before this happens & they fall.  Others would be assigned to giving directions to guests & escorting VIPS, I think.

Hi Moms-

My son leaves August 19--maybe they will all meet!

I am starting to try and think about trying to attend PIR but not sure when it will be-- Oct 16??

Any/all thoughts/experience welcome!!

KevsMom

Many thanks!!!

I'm hoping for the 16th but I am afraid it will be the 23rd since he is leaving on a Thursday.  He is SOOOO excited to be finally leaving.  We spent the weekend with his wife & him in the NC mountains this weekend, then tomorrow the are having us over for dinner at their apartment, then Tuesday is a last family dinner at my house with my daughter, SIL and their baby. And then Wednesday we drive him to the recruiter (2 hours away).  So we are making the most of the time we have together.
