For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

So, August moms~ How are you doing?
My son leaves for GL on 8/8 and I am excited, proud, nervous, a bit sad and much more! Lots of emotions! He has been a DEPper since early November, so I should be ready... but not really!
He is in for 6 yrs because he is going to be a nuke. He says he wants to make a career of the Navy. Time wll tell.
I have 4 kids... a married son (lives close by), a daughter 22 (in college and moving out next month ~finally), my DEP son- 18, and my baby~ almost 15 yr old son.
With my daughter and my Navy boy leaving soon I am going to have a near empty nest, after YEARS of having a full, noisy house. I also hate autumn, so I am thinking I need to be VERY busy when that time comes. Life is about changes. I know that, but it sure is bittersweet to let your babies grow up!
So, how are you gals doing?

Hi Dale!! I have my good days and bad days. This week has been a tough one because my son is graduating high school tomorrow and since I have already counted weeks I know that everything else will happen in 4 week increments (vacation then bc) which I know will go by really quick!!! I know that going into the Navy will be good for him and I'm so excited for the life experiences it will bring for him, however, its soooo hard to let go!!! He is my oldest and I have my daughter who will be 15 in July still at home, but I keep thinking lord it doesn't seem too long ago that he was finishing his freshman year so I know these next 3 years with her will go by just as fast. I am so proud of both of them but I know I will be the "wimpy" one! All I can do is hope and pray that I have taught them both the best I could so they have a solid foundation to starting their own lives and that they will be OK!! I have shed many tears in the last several weeks and I know the next 8 weeks there will be even more!!!

Yep, I am right there with you! My son graduated on 5/28 and his recruiter came to graduation. It really felt like we were handing him over to the USN at that moment. Whew!!
As I said, I have 4 kids, and love them all madly... but this boy, well, he has always been so close to me. He looks out for me, calls me his "little mama". He always kisses me on top of my head when he leaves the house. He picks up heavy things for me (LOL), he "gets" me! So, I will miss him so much. That being said, this is what he should do. It suits him to a T. He is so driven, so hard-working, smart and ready to take on the world. SO, I remind myself of these things and have my"moments " in private. This is good, fine and noble thing our childern are embarking on... but it is real and it is tough on moms.
We'll be okay! So glad we have this place for support! I don't know any other military moms in "real life'. N4M is my lifeline!

I feel the same.... graduated 5/26 and leaves 8/11.... The DEP from April to Aug sounded great, but the closer it gets, it seems to short! I am so glad I found N4M, just still learning to navigate.

Hello Everyone!!
My son Sean ships out August 9, 2011. He signed up last October, and the time's gone by pretty fast. I am sooooo excited for him, and I know he will excel. I can't believe our boys have less than 2 months!! Let's all keep in touch, and I hope I get to meet all of you at the meet and greet.

My son Tyler (only child), ships on Aug 9, 2011 also. I'm experiencing all of the usual emotions. I have a concern though - when asked questions by friends or family about going into the Navy, he'll respond with just a short answer. With me, he doesn't even want to talk about it. It's like he's avoiding the entire situation, but I know he'll do it when the time gets here. I want to help him prepare mentally and physically with tips I have been given by many people who've been in the service. He just doesn't want to hear anything. Am I being too worried?
This is the first time on this site, and I'm thankful that it's available. I'm sure I'll be utilizing it.
Good luck to all the DEPs and families out there We need to rally together for support.

Thanks - it's just what I needed after a good cleansing cry. You're absolutely right, but the normal thoughts of our little babies maybe having to learn the hard way is hard for me.
I've never heard the term "helicopter mom" but it surely fits me too! We'll hang in there together!
