While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

What determines if their departure date is moved up? My son is scheduled to leave 12/11/12. We have planned a farewell get together on 12/01 thinking that would be safe. We are in south Ga but he will be leaving out of Jacksonville, Fl..

My son is scheduled to leave Jacksonville 12/13. Originally was to leave on the 11th but they pushed it back.

My daughter leaves 12/5 from NYC, her date went from 12/18, to 12/12 and then to 12/5. Wasnt unexpected, tho, so I cant say it was a surprise. She had her going away parties this past weekend.

Sometimes it's their rating, or job they wanted. That's what happened to my daughter. She was supposed to leave in January, but then the rating she really wanted opened up, so her date was moved up to Dec.

Figgie125, my daughter will leave one day after yours. She has MEPS on the 5th, then gets on the bus for GL on the 6th. I wonder if they will be in the same group? We are in the Chicago area, but my husband and I were born and bred in New York.

Our son leaves 12/5 from IL. The time is passing so fast now. :( We're celebrating Christmas this weekend with our 3 other kids, and then having a little going away get together the night of the 4th with friends and extended family. He's not our first child to leave home, we have a 23 and 21 year old who don't live at with us anymore, but this is SO much different, knowing he won't just be a phone call away, and can't just drop in for lunch or dinner, ya know? We are very excited and proud, but sad too. I'm sure you all are feeling the same way....especially right before the holidays.

The time is soooo passing quickly! I can't type the message without crying....My son is my ONLY child and I am an emotional roller coaster. Happy, but sad! We had our celebrations last weekend. We will spend these last few days getting his wallet together and just relaxing...that is what he wanted. You are right it is different when they are just a phone call away, as my son spent one year away in college.
My son will go with his recruiter on Dec. 4 stay over night at a hotel near O'Hare Airport, then get sworn in on the 5th. We will be there for his swearing in. After that he boards the bus and is off to boot camp. What is your process?

I know we chatted a bit earlier - but didn't discuss this in detail. We will take him to the recruiters office Wednesday morning the 5th, and they'll drive him to MEPS down in STL, and then he'll be bussed up to GL on the 6th. I thought he was already sworn in at MEPS back in June though - do they go through another swearing in process now, too?
The more I read here, the more overwhelmed I am. We had no idea how much we needed to know and prepare for - so with less than a week to go, we're going to be super busy!! Nevermind that we lost a day, because he/we thought he didn't leave until the 6th, and we just found out that it was actually the 5th just 2 days ago! -

My son was sworn in a few months ago as well. What I recently learned is that was the swearing into the US Non Paid Navy Reserves. I think that was required in order for him to do DEP. On the 5th O'Shay will be sworn into the US Navy. His recruiter said that lots of parents and friends will be present(no tickets required). Once all are sworn in then we cheer them on as they get on the bus and.....then the crying starts.
The swearing in is at MEPS.
Yes, whenever they give you a date it is always a day before that your child will leave. I learned that a while ago. I am sorry that you were not given that information. What I would suggest is that you contact his recruiter and schedule a meeting with him to go through the process in detail. Our recruiter came to the house on Monday and spent about an hour with us. He has been here 3 times; whenever I called he came to try to answer all my questions.

Now I am totally overwhelmed. I thought I had this all under control. I have sent all three of my kids off to college, seen two get married. One move away with her Air Force husband and just send him off to Korea for a year. But this is starting to really hit me! My son was sworn in last April and now ships out to GL on December 11. I appreciate the suggestion to call his recruiter and meet with him to get a handle on things. I have tried to give my son his space and independence as he was away at college for almost 3 years before making the decision to serve his country in the Navy, and the last thing he wanted was to move back home for 9 months. I am going to call his recruiter first thing in the morning (more for my own peace of mind).
