Our oldest son left Portland OR today and arrived at RTC GLakes this evening. We received a very brief phone call from him this evening just letting us know he'd arrived and that a package of things/info would be arriving in about a week. I could hear many others making the same brief call home at the same time.
Anyone else in the So. Oregon region have a son/daughter who arrived at RTC today or is already there? We miss him already - the house is so quiet w/o him...... Very proud of him and all the others that have made the decision to serve. My husband and I were both civilian employees working for the Navy in the San Diego, CA area and are both retired now, so we have familiarity working with Navy personnel and on Naval bases.
I'm so glad to learn about this NavyforMoms.com website - didn't even know about it until we went to the recruiter's office yesterday to say good-bye. I know I'll have a lot of questions and hope to get them answered here. I did purchase a phone card for our son to have before he left, but couldn't find it yesterday when we were about to leave, so glad to know he'll be able to purchase one at the NEX.
My husband and I were wondering if we shouldn't have had him get a Power of Attorney before he left; my husband said he had one when he served in the Army during the Korean War. Any thoughts on this?
Hoping their first day/week goes smoothly and they sleep well in their racks. They are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi michaelsmom: We live in Merlin. Our son is James. He's 22.
I think I met your son last tues when I dropped Michael off at the Recruiters. is he going into a 800 div? so nice to have another mom from our town.We live off of Pinecrest. I am glad you found this site I found it by accident when planning Michaels going away party and told Cheif and Petty Officer that they should let the other moms know about navyformoms. It has made me feel so much better researching and know whats going on that I can relax. Now just waiting for the BOX! and form letter
Hi! Yes, our son, James, is going into 800 division. It's great to know we can share info and just chat. I have a really good friend who also lives on Pinecrest (The Beard's), and visit her often. Yes, it will be great to have that form letter (I'm assuming that is what has the mailing address on it?). I guess it takes about a week to get the BOX? Love this web site. I only wish I'd known about it much sooner so I could've prepared for his departure to GL a bit better. I found out about it on Sunday, when I met PO Davis for the first time. Missing James, but he's doing what he wanted. So glad to know there's another Mom close by to share info, thoughts, etc.
