Hello all -

My daughter will be leaving in just 47 days arriving in GL on the 7th. So far she is the only one at her recruiting station to be leaving on that date.  Anyone out there have a Future Sailor with an RTC arrival date of January 7th?  I know they're all in "it" together, but my daughter will be in the Navy Aircrewman job category.  I'd love to compare info.  ;-)

Hello Karin

My son is also leaving Jan 7 from OK. He is an Undesignated Airman. The time is flying by so fast and I get butterfiles in my stomach everytime I realize how close it really is. How about you?

Hi Carol - I was good until I was able to count in days rather than months. While very excited for her new doubts creep in - especially the more I read about how difficult basic is and then narrowing down the rate to something specific (A school). But you know what? This is our time to let them go so they can own their accomplishments and be proud of themselves. As moms we're always proud. Stay strong mom! Give them the smiles they'll need at RTC.

Hi Karin,

My daughter leaves for BC on Jan 27th from Pennsylvania. Like your daughter, mine will be Navy Air Crewman as well. I am a complete nervous wreck....typical as far as I am reading, which in a sense, is kind of comforting, given the circumstances. Being on this site, I do not feel so alone. I am extremely close to my 18 year old daughter, and when she gets on that plane, I will feel such an emptiness I'm sure. I am trying to prepare myself for this, yet no matter what I do, it seems like one can never really prepare to let their child go.... She signed up sometime in May(ish) and at that point, in my mind, I had 8 long months to spend with her before she headed off into the real world. Much to my dismay, she leaves in a mere 8 weeks from now and the reality of it all is starting to set in for me, full force. Just wanted to share, and let you know, as well as all moms/parents here, that you are all in my thoughts! I wish the best for "OUR" children of the future. They are making us, as parents, proud... Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, by the way. I hope you had a wonderful day! I look forward to future communications~ Feel free to add me. Thanks, Jodi

How are you doing now?  My daughter leaves in 5 days and I have such mixed feelings.  Right now we have a lot to do to prepare for her leaving and for my trips to GL and then to FL - what does she want to get rid of, what does she want in March, what does she want me to bring in April, etc.  I'm also suggesting a trim before she gets to GL so the hair doesn't get in the way and it's easier to wash during a 2 min shower.  Our biggest thing is keeping her away from sick people.  Ha!  I have her taking Airborne now, but with MEPS on Tuesday morning she cannot be sick.  I'm guessing our daughters may wind up in the same classes in A school.  I hope they are able to connect.  I hope all the recruits are able to connect with others to not only make their team, but to create real friendships as well.  Very glad electronics (texting, social media, blogs, Tumblr, etc) are not going to be part of their world for awhile so they can connect on a personal level.  Ha!  Good luck and just drop me a line if you need someone to commiserate with.

My son will be leaving Jan 7th, as well.  He will be going on to Sonar Technician.  His travels to Great Lakes are only about an hour away from home.  He'll be so close, but yet soooo far.

I read that the recruits should talk to each other and let each other know who's mom is a member of NavyforMoms in case they are unable to make phone calls because of watch duty.  My recruit could tell your recruit to post a message to me on the Facebook group so I know all is well.  I think it's a great idea - if our recruits can connect with each other.  ;-))  I do see a whole lot of members on these groups though.

My son leaves January 15 so maybe they will run into each other.  His name is Tommy.  Your daughter will leave in one week and my son in two weeks.  I have done a lot of research here and feel much better.  But when I try to have a discussion with my son, his reply to me is "Mom, I've done everything by myself so far.  I'm adult and it will be okay."   That's been hard.  Today, I printed calling cards for him.  I emailed the administrator callsforrecruits@gmail.com and they emailed me 8 free calling cards (allows them 20 min. each card).  They say six are for my son and two for him to give away.  I hope he excepts them.  I also printed small pictures for him to take.  :)   He doesn't realize I'm going to miss him so much.  :(

I discussed the pictures with my daughter last night and we decided that they might not be a good idea.  Of course females are more emotional than males - generally, but we decided that having the pictures might increase any homesickness that might occur (not likely with my daughter, but possible).  I'm going to trust they they will have her busy, busy and when she has an opportunity to sleep she will conk out.  Neither one of us want any distractions.  I'll see her at graduation and then again when I drive down to Florida a month later so she should be fine.  She has some intensive training and academics so I'm trying not to bug her too much.  ;-))  Of course while I have her here we're going over the things to do before... list.  Only 5 days now before she leaves.  Yikes!

My son leaves for BC on Tuesday as well. Right now I am very concerned about the extreme cold weather. I will be encouraging him to contact his recruiter to see what suggestions he has for preparing for his ship date and the weather. I just want to make sure he isn't out in the cold and unprepared. He's a CA boy so that cold Midwest weather is going to be a shock to his system!

The airport is heated, but he will have a short walk from the airport to the bus and from the bus to Inprocessing. From then on he will have the clothes that he needs to stay warm for the time that he is outdoors traveling between buildings (ships) while onboard the RTC. See Arrival and What Happens at the RTC.

See the discussion, Things to Do in the Last Month before Your Future Sailor Leaves for..., to help you prepare. Some have bought a coat at Good Will or another used clothing store that the recruit then donates or sent the recruit with a ratty one that the recruit then throws away rather than mailing home.

Thank you lemonelephant! Again you are a wealth of information. His recruiter today said they will look like a michelin man with all the warm clothes they get!

Pretty much. When they go out, you can only see their eyes and very little else.
