Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of January (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

If you have January ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in January, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves (Click on the link.)

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones)  Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc. Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

Thanks for joining us. We hope you will realize you are not alone, and will soon make new friends, plus feel supported and encouraged! :)

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Fitness Standards"The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes 37 seconds for female recruits."

KarenJ John's Mom ~ I think that post was a bit confusing. I recommend you join your "PIR" Group (by date) when you know it and also a division group if one is started for your SRs division once you get the form letter (then it is official). ~ That is what I think ; ) ~ kk

hallmom ~ Regarding the shot record; my son did not get approximately 4 of the shots that other SRs received. This was because of his shot record. It is not needed, but I requested one from our family doctor per a suggestion on the website. ~ kk

momoffour ~ Yes! Taking the cell phone is good. He can use it until he gets on the bus at O'Hare. When he gets to GL RTC he will be advised to make his call and using his cell is a lot quicker than waiting for a pay phone. The cell will come home in the box. Some Recruits take the battery out and place the phoen in one shoe and the battery in the other...so be on the look out when the box comes. My son did not take any of the security information, but did call with 2 quick questions during BC. ~ kk

Thanks for the information. It reminded me to gather up his shot record for him to take, I would have totally forgot about that! I also have he should only go with just the clothes he is wearing, and a coat. I guess he might take his phone and send it back in the box. Will he need all the information for the security clearance again. I know for some it was easy but poor thing because of hubby,s job we have moved ALOT and even we had trouble remembering old addresses.

What to take to GL RTC: The clothes on your body (do not overload - the SRs pay for return home shipping = "kid-in-a-box"), a small address book with a book of stamps, activated phone card (remember;the pay phones will automatically deduct $.88 before any minutes are used - so prepare - you can send another later if you wish - or the SR can buy them at the NEX), driver's license, social security card, civilian immunization record (may save some additional shots), account information for direct deposit (the SRs also have an opportunity to open an account), and cash (the Recruits leaving with my son took a range of $25 to $50). There are other items allowed; watch (usually kept in the rack and worn at PIR), wedding ring, and needed marital paperwork. Also a small bible and cross are allowed. You can check with your Recruiter and the website for more information. If anyone advises clothing items, other than bras or sports bras for females, I would question it. The uniforms and clothing items are issued. Note: This is general not all inclusive and may have changed since 9/09 through 11/09.~ kk

Eyewear; Their glasses will be replaced with BCGs. My son kept his civilian glasses in his rack and was able to wear them at PIR.

Also note: Stationary is provided and writing instruments are purchased on their first trip to the NEX. Recently, these items have been donated to the USO in O'Hare before they get on the GL RTC buses.

I will find it impossible not to cry. On a positive note, I will see him off at the airport on Tuesday but we get to talk to him for two more weeks on the phone until he leaves for BC> I am still so confused over what to send with him, I read somewhere they need socks, underwear. I also remember reading phone card, stamps and stationary. I do not want to send anything that will just be tossed or sent back. Anyone know what information is most accurate? Thanks!!
