I am new to this site and so happy I found it! My son leaves for GL on July 29th and I have mixed emotions but I am so proud of him. Just looking for other moms/family going through the same thing. It is always nice to know you are not alone!

AZNavymom - did you get the call yet?! :) I hope so... They probably didn't do much with him at that point I wouldn't think but make sure you have your phone with you at all times!! I am sure they will not keep him from making that call. Let us know!!
No call yet! Maybe he's being processed with today's group and I'll get the call tonite!
I guess living in Illinois has it's perks! Our sailor arrived at GL on Monday the 29th and we received "the box" today (Wednesday, July 31st.
Haven't opened it yet, as we will wait for my husband to get home after five; but our dog keeps on going over to it and sniffing it and wagging her tail!
We also received our "Blue Star" flag today from the flag company where we ordered our flag from. That also only took a few days to receive. And yes, the flag is already up in our front window.
Maureenwithfive, what is the Blue Star Flag? How do I get one?
Hello Lori!
These Blue Star Banners, known as service flags are used to honor a family member who is a member of the U.S. military. Sometimes it's for recognition of service during a war, sometimes just being in the service is enough. For most families, it's a personal choice whether to fly the Blue Star flag.
The number of the stars on the flag (our's has one) represents how many family members are currently serving.
We feel its important to do all that we can do to honor our son's commitment and dedication to the military, and by hanging the Blue Star Flag in our front window, its a nice way to achieve that.
Just Google "Blue Star Flag" and you can find a lot of places to purchase one.

Glad you heard from him and all is okay so far!
AZNavymom, hope your sailor called by now! I too am looking forward to receiving the box. I hope their first day of boot camp went well! I kept tearing up at work today, kinda embarrassing, especially when I'm doing so in front of my patients! I'm so proud of all of our children, how brave they are to agree to this experience!
Thanks so much for the encouragement, ChristinaMarie. You are so right when you say that it is a huge change. I am over the moon proud of my girl!
Lori (and all the other moms on here!)
He never did call. I guess with getting in late, somehow they were not given that opportunity. I am very bummed. If I had gotten that first call, I could just settle in to the routine, knowing it would be at least 2 weeks till the next one. Now, I keep wondering if he'll get to make that arrival call later since they missed out or is that it, just never get that call. His girlfriend is disappointed, too. I guess my son must be disappointed he didn't get to call. I'm not worried, just disappointed.
