Does anyone have any good ideas of what to send besides regular letters? I've heard those musical cards are a big no-no, and apparently comics. I'm going to send some funny pictures, but I'm not sure what else to send.

When my husband was in Germany he'd send me postcards so I could see where he had been and planned to take me to when I got there. I still have everyone of them.

Letter Writing & Fun Stuff/Questionnaires to send to your Recruit within Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) will have some ideas for you. I invite you to join that group while you are there and to check out the other Pages (found under the pictures of the Members) as well.

SailorsSweetheartJessie..I have sent ITune Cards, NEX Gift Cards and photos of family holding a sign...Miss You Love You.....Proud of You and so on. I also have sent a cake for his birthday from Bake me a Wish. They have cookies and all kind of baked goodies. Hope this helps. Navy Hugs:)

momplus2, you need to check what group you are posting in and remember this is for those with recruits at the RTC or soon to be there. The NEX cards are fine and so are the photos. It is not a good idea to send food items to BC.  I suspect that the ITune Cards would cause a problem as well if sent to BC. Since you have a Sailor, those items were all fine to be sent to "A" School and now that he is in the fleet, but cookies, cake, and musical cards would only be a good idea at BC if someone really thought their recruit needed extra IT to be ready for the final PFA, but I don't think the recruit would appreciate that extra help and s/he wouldn't get to enjoy the cookies, cake, or musical card.

See http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/pdfs/FamilyGuide_v14Mar2013.pdf and DON'T send food items to the RTC.

I sent several of the questionnaires to him found on the Boot Camp Moms group.  He didn't fill out all of them, but on the ones that he did send back it gave me a lot of information about what he was going through.  I did send some cards (but not the musical ones) and he seemed to enjoy those.

Newspaper clippings or maybe the sports page. My son really liked articles from the newspaper.

Be careful with newspaper clippings, some RDC's allow them and some don't. It's best to copy and paste the info into a Word document at first and ask your SR if newspaper and/or magazine clippings are allowed. Some recruits received whole newspaper pages without a problem and others recieved IT for a short clipping.

This looks like a good spot to check on my latest question! We just had a kid visit with us who has just graduated from Army boot camp. He said that they were only allowed handwritten mail - it sounds to me, from all of your responses, and the site info, that this is not true with the Navy, but I thought that I should check! He also said that postcards were always read aloud & that he had drill sergeants who would add push ups for p/c recipients - one per word on the postcard.....any of this likely to happen at Navy BC?

You can send letters that are from a Word or other word processing document and include pics or info pasted into the document. Yes, post cards often get read aloud. The RDC's will find a reason to give IT if needed, so that is a possibility.  See Letter Writing & Fun Stuff/Questionnaires to send to your Recruit for more info on that.
